Battey D, or the Fourth Michigan Battery, also known as Church's Battery, to which Branch County furnished three-fourths of the members, was organized during the first months of the war, and proceeded to the scene of hostilities in Kentuck in December, 1861; it took part in the battle of Corinth, Stone River, and Chickamauga, and the campaigns centering about Nashville, Murfreesboro, and Chattanooga, and also fought at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. It remained in Tennessee until July, 1865, and soon after was sent home and discharged.

Peter J. Kidney, died of disease at Monterey Tenn., May 13, 1862.
