S. HERBERT HOWES FACTORY, PLEASANT STREET

Mr. Howe commenced business in 1856, in a shop which stood near where the Pleasant Street school-house now stands.  This is the shop spoken of in the article of Rev. R. A. Griffen, (Note: Eccentric Men of Marlborough - webmaster).  The shop corner of Elm and Pleasant Streets has been several times enlarged, and is now recieving still further addition.  The capacity is 4800 pairs of shoes per day.

The "Tucker Shop", further south on Pleasant Street (Note: towards Lincoln Street - webmaster), was built by F. A. Howe in 1861, afterwards owned by James Tucker.  S. H. Howebought it in 1878 and refitted and refurnished it.  It's capacity is 1800 pairs today.
