~ THREE if by “AIRPLANE” ~ Researched and edited by Ray Shoop
You know the story about Paul Revere and the lights in the steeple tower.
If had just been about 300 years later, I am sure it would have been:
One if by land,
Two if by Sea
Three if by airplaneNestled by trees, about a quarter of a mile from busy Rt20, on the east side of Marlborough resides “The oldest privately owned commercial airport in Massachusetts”.
As with many sections in the city, housing has expanded on all sides around the airport.
The Marlboro airport has remained a friendly small airport environment with its many neighbors. Most of the pilots who use the airport are homeowners in the area. The limited usage airport has not spoiled the ‘country’ atmosphere within the city. There a no runway lights nor rotating beacons to intrude on the evening. With only one runway available, there are many days there are no flight operations at the airport due to weather.
There is a flight training school and repair shop to service the airplanes. There is an active group of local pilots that are attracting new blood into the flying hobby. They participate in a program called Young Eagles. The goal of the Young Eagles Program is to give one million young people ages 8-17 a free introductory airplane flight by the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first powered flight in the year 2003. These rides are provided through the generosity of nearly 30,000 volunteer pilots. Through the Young Eagles Program, they hope to inspire a new generation to explore the exciting world of aviation.
