Descendants of Marie Joseph Kaniaronkwas ~

I recently received the following from Theresa Cook Jemison who said she got this information from Church records at the St Regis Indian Reservation in northern NY (the church is on the Canadian side of St Lawrence) with the help of the Priest in 1971. Some of these records must have originated at Kanawake.

In her letter to me she states she sent this material to Marlboro, Mass received a reply and drove to Westboro in May of 1972 staying with Rachel Dearing, whom she calls a historian, heard the Rice story, and met many members of the Rice family.

I may have made spelling errors when I copied the Indian names as I had difficulty reading the small writing. Theresa made notes when the Priest was searching the Church records and prepared Pedigree charts from the notes.

Theresa`s first husband was a Mohawk, her second a Seneca and she has lived on the Tonawanda Seneca Reservation near Batavia, NY for over 50 years. She says her 2nd husband, Edmund Jamison, was a prisoner of war of the Japanese at a camp in Manchuria after being captured on Corrigidor. He had a master`s degree from the school of Social Work at the former Univ. of Buffalo. Her two sons have college degrees as do many of her grandchildren.

She still reads and speaks Mohawk which assisted in following the Indian names in the church records.
