Notes for RICHARD FISKE:
from "GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH IN ENGLAND", NEHGS Register,
v. 92, p. 287 - 288, by G. Andrews Moriarty
"We now turn to the problem of the parentage of
Richard Fiske "of the Broadgates" in Laxfield, who heads
the Candler pedigree. The early evidence for his existence
is the Candler pedigree, but as Matthias Candler, the
compiler (born in 1604), was the great-grandson of
Robert Fiske, the testator of 1602, and as in other
respects the conributor has found his pedigree of the
family accurate, he thinks we may accept Richard as
his great-great-grandfather. Now this Richard must have
been born as early as 1500 as his sons were mature men in
the middle of the 16th century and he was undoubtedly born
somewhat earlier, about 1480 - 1485. This Richard does
not appear in the great Subsidy of 1524 and it is reasonable
to suppose that at this date he was dead, leaving a family
of 11 children, according to Candler, who must have all been
born prior to that date. Now we find no Fiskes in Laxfield
in the 16th century who were not descendants of Simon
Fiske who died in 1463/4. It is, therefore, reasonable to
suppose that Richard was also a descendant of Simon, in
which case he must have been a great-grandson in order
to square with the known chronology of the family. On
examination, the families of the grandsons of Simon show
that all their children are known with the exception of the
family of Geoffrey Fiske (son of Geoffrey, the testator of
1504, son of the first Simon). Of the latter's family we
know only of his son John (named as such in the will of
"Sir" John Fiske, the testator of 1535). It is reasonable
to suppose that this Geoffrey had other children and that
Richard was one of them. This idea is greatly strengthened
by the fact that Richard named his fourth son, according
to Candler, Geoffrey -- a name which again appears in the
family of Richard's son Robert. It would seem, accordingly,
both by elimination and the repetition of the name Geoffrey
in the family of Richard, that the latter must have been a
son of Geoffrey (son of Geoffrey the 1504 testator) and
the great-grandson of the first Simon."

Notes for John FISKE:
from SAVAGE, VOL 2 DICT. FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND
FISKE, JOHN, Wenham, son of that John who died 1633 (and
was son of William, son of Robert, who was son of Richard
of Laxfield in Queen Mary's time); born as Mather tells (in
Magn. III. c. 24), about 1601, at St. James parish in South
Elmham, a subdivision of the hundred of Wangford, County
Suffolk bred at King's College Cambridge. There took his
A. B. 1625, though Mather makes it Emanuel, married at eight
and twenty years of age, by the same authority 1629, Ann Gipps
of Frinshall, County Norfolk, had, as tradition said, two
children who died as infants but two others he brought with his
wife and a younger brother, perhaps William, to Boston, 1637,
sat down first at Cambridge, but removed the same year to Salem,
freeman 2 November 1637, taught the grade school among his
pupils one being famous afterward as Sir George Downing,
minister for Cromwell and Charles Il at the Hague, had John,
born 29 August, baptized 2 September 1638, died under nine
years; Sarah, 24, baptized 26 July 1640; Moses, born at Wenham,
12 April, baptized at Salem by Mr. Norris in June 1642, Harvard
College 1662; he had preached occasionally for Hugh Peters, and
removed to be minister at Wenham, ordained 8 October 1644, had
there Ann, 15 January, baptized 12 March 1646, being the first
baptism in that church, Eliezur, 8, baptized 14 February 1647,
died young; removed 1655 to and was minister of Chelmsford,
where his wife Ann died 14 February 1672, "after living with him
about 37 yrs." This renders Mather's account of the marriage in
1629, impossible and also the tradition of his having had four
children in England as she was his first wife and makes it
probable that he brought only one child. On 1 August following,
he married Elizabeth, widow of Edmund Henchman, and he died
14 January 1677. His daughter Ann married Captain John Brown
of Reading, and died 30 May 1681, aged 35.

from SAVAGE, VOL 2 DICT. FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND
FISKE, NATHAN, Watertown, probably brother of the first David, was of an
honorable family in County Suffolk bearing coat of arms so early as the
days of Henry VI., as appears on record. Freeman 10 May 1643, by wife
Susanna had Nathan, born 17 October 1642; John, 25 August 1647; David,
29 April 1650; Nathaniel, 12 July 1653; and Sarah, who married Abraham

John executor but of that son we hear no more from Bond. Perhaps he
died unmarried or removed.

Notes for JOSIAH FISKE:
from "Waltham as a Precinct of Watertown and as a Town 1630
- 1884"
Josiah Fiske, a descendant of Nathan Fiske the pioneer,
lived on the north side of the Great Road nearly opposite
Prospect Street. His house was built by his uncle David
Fiske perhaps before 1700. Josiah was a housewright and
was selectman of Waltham in 1749 and 1750. In 1753 he
sold his home to a distant relative Abijah Fiske and it
was sold by the latter to his son-in-law Zechariah Weston
in 1793. The house disappeared from the records a short
time afterwards.
