January 1, 1800 - October 2, 1802

mon 19 Light frost
I was grubing all day.

tus 20 sharp frost
I was working in my Clearing till noon than I went to brother ALEXRS & him & I went to the WIDOW CRAGES from there about a mile farther to Where the WIDOW JEAN LOWEY Lives got some corn that she was oweing of me than Returnd home to my fathers & staid till morning

wen 21 frost
I wrought in my clearing till noon & FREDERICK FISHER came to my fathers & Desired me for to Ride apeace with him to WM THOMPSONS so I did but no Body being at home we returnd back to Dadys & Both the Mattock being brok I sot off for DANIEL WINCHESTERS shop & FISHER with me we called in at HUGH McCRORYS from there to ANDWR MATHERS & behold the had got some rum there so we being fond of a Little spirits to Revive our Drooping spirits - alight & gets a Quart for 1/2 Dollar Drank a pint of it there & borrows a Bottle & takes the Remeinder with us & on We gos to the shop & I Could not get my work done that night so I goes on hom with FISHER from there to WM McCAINS & stay till morning (SALLY McCAIN)  I was very freindly entertained.

Early I sot off from McCAINS & gos to GEORGE McWHIRTERS juniers from that to Where ELIJAH MAYS Lives on sd McWHIRTERS Land from that to uncles in the even I Left that & went to DANIEL WINCHESTERS shop again got my Mattocks from that to ANDWR MATHEWS took a Drop of Rum again from there to JOSEPH McCAMMONS to a corn Husking when we got done I went home to my fathers & staid till Morning

I was grubing till noon than I went off for to go to ROBERT HUEYS my brotherinlaws & as I went by HUGH McCRORYS I called in at  MR LAWSON Cotten picking Macheen she was just begining for to pick - I went on to HUEYS & him & I went over to SHARID GREYS Esqr about a Land trade between HUEY & GREY by this time it was dark we sot & pertook of a Bottle of Whisky than back to HUEYS they ware very freindly with me

after takeing Brackfast with Mr HUEY I went to JAS BECKETS from that to my fathers & staid all Night

mon 26 Rain where I was in the even
I sot off from my fathers in order the Next day for to go into Sharlet it is Court week there I Rode to JOSEPH REEDS there I stopt & fed my horse from there I went to JAS HARRIES from that to JAS OSBOURNS alowing for to stay all Night I staid till dark & his son JNO & I stept over to one JNO BLACKES a young man & 2 of his sisters Lives there we staid till morning Convesing of the young Ladys it was Miss (PEGGY BLACK) that I Discourst & she was very condecending

We Left JNO BLACKS & went to JAS OSBOURNS my Comrads fathers after Brackfast the old jentleman & I sot off & Rode into Charlott & was in Town till even than ROBERT HUEY my brotherinLaw & I Left Town & Rode to WM STEWARDS about 3 Miles out of Town there we made a Little stay & Took a grog & our Dinners than went on to another WM STEWARDS & tarred till morning

we Left WM STEWARDS & went home to Mr HUEYS from there we went to the Mathodist Meeting house for to hear one Mr JINKENS preach he took his Taxt in the 33 psalm & I think he made a poor out of it when he was done I went home to my fathers (this voige was but 2 shillings out)

I was working in my Clearing I got a Negro of SOLOMAN HARRIES at grubing this day

I was working in my Clearing till noon Than I sot off & went to JAS BECKETS from there to Where ELIJAH MAYS not Lives my Business there was for to Receive some corn that I was for to get there.  But When I went he was not at home so I went from there to uncles & staid all night

I Left uncles & Rode to my fathers (is is about 8 miles) & wrought in my Clearing till Late I went over to brother WMS & back again & staid all night It is now an uncommon Dry fall such as has very seldom ever been seen.  Corn may be bought at this time for 37-1/2 Cents per Bushel Wheat a Dollar Rye 75 Cents. has been but Little fruit this year & a Little Mast-- Quentitys of Cotton- very Little Tobaco

I was working in my Clearing till noon than I went to DANIL WINCHESTERS shop for to get my Ax up sot & WINCHESTER had a Quentity of Whisky & some of us that was met there turnd in & took a grog than ELIJAH MAYS & I Left that & went to JNO RODGERS from that to PETER RAPES from that to JAS BECKETS from there to Dadys & staid till morning

in the even I went up to brother ALEXRS & back to Dadys at Night (by the Request of WM McCRORY) I went back to my brothers & staid till morning.

Early I went from brother ALEXRS Down to my fathers - wrought in my Clearing till noon Than I took my gun in my hand & sot off in order for to go to JAS RICHES for to me ELIJAH SIBLEY for to buy some corn of him I called in at TILMAN HELMS from that to RICHES & met SIBLEY Bought 32 Bushels of corn from him at 2-1/2 Bushels for a Dollar than Returnd back to HELMS & on home to my fathers I walked from HELMS home since Dark & it was Cloudy & very Dark so that I could hardly find the way & by the time I got home I was very wearied it is 7 or 8 miles to RICHES

I wrought in my Clearing till Late (yeas & Burnt up my jacket & a note in the pocket for 36 Bushels of Corn) Than I sadled my horse & Rode to HUGH RODGERS by this time it was in the Night I staid till morning

I Left HUGH RODGERS & went to whare ELIJAH MAYS in order for to Receive some corn from him his corn was not all huskt so I turnd in & huskt corn till Late than I went to uncles & staid all Night

I was all day at uncles

uncle & I sot off in order for to Collect Money went to old Mr ROBERT ROBERTSONS was by several other houses but did Not alight any whare else we Returnd home than I Left that & went to whare ELIJAH MAYS Lives & Received 53-1/2 Bushels of corn from him than I went to JEORGE McWHIRTERS junier from that to ANDWR MATHEWS from there to JNO FINEYS & he came home just than from Camdon I Drank some Rum with him than went home to my fathers

I was working in my Clearing - at noon I was over at brother WMS in the even I was up at brother ALEXRS geting my Mattock upsot.

I went to brother ALEXRS from there to whare WM McCAY now Lives for a pair of shoes that he was for to make for my Negro Boy I had taken the Leather there several weeks ago But when I got there he had not began them & I was almost angry takes up my Leather & marches back to brother ALEXRS again & home to my father & away with my Leather to SHADRACK ELKENS for to get him for to make shoes but he was not at home I came home again.

I sot off from Dadys & went to JAS RICHES in order for to Receive some corn that I am for to get there the property of DEMS ODAM when I went there ODAM was not & I went to DAVID RICHES on the search of him but found him not I Returnd back to old Mr RICHES from that to SOLOMON SIMONS & ABRAHAM MOSES (the jews) from that home to my fathers he was just came home from Camdon.

I feel very soletary - But I am promising myself for to pay a visit this week if it pleases God for to spare me health & who ever perues these Lines & in anctious for to know where or who I aim for to visit may follow the weeks Travels & perhaps they will hear her Name Mentioned.  I went over to brother WMS & back to Dadys.

I was working in my Clearing till night Than I went up to brother ALEXRS & him & I went over to MATHEW SMITHS in order for to Trade for his Land but we found him not at home so we made but Little tarry I went home with my brother & from that home to fathers. (however this day I sold a sadle to JNO REDFORD for 7 Dollare & 75 Cents give 8 months credit)

I sot off from my fathers & rode Down to uncles from there I went to WM McCAINS & staid all night (SALLY McCAIN) Ah the freindship

Missies McCAIN made me a present of Cloth for a pair of overalls.  I Left Mr McCAINS & went to the WIDOW WILSONS from there to uncles from that I went to my fathers again & over to brother WMS from there to SHADRICK ELKENS for a pair of shoes back again to WMS & to Dadys & staid all Night

I was working in my Clearing till Late than I was at JAS BECKETS PETER RAPES Brother WMS & home to my fathers.

this morning MATHEW SMITH brother ALEXR came to Dadys & ALEXR bought SMITH PLANTATION 100 acres & SMITH made him a Deed for which ALEXR if for to give him 200 Dollars & four years for to make the Last payment.  I went over to brober WMS & helpt him for to Right the Roof of his house than home again in the evening up to ALEXRS & home again (a Light rain)

I went to JAS BECKETS from that to ROBERT HUEYS to a Corn Husking & staid all night.

I went from ROBERT HUEYS to my uncles from there in the even 2 of his Negro Boys & I went to JNO WALKERS seniers for to shill some Corn that I was for to get from him (for which I paid him 50 Cents a Bushel) from there I went over to JNO HUEYS it was for the Loan of a 1/2 Bushel I returnd back to WALKEKS & staid all night

uncle came down to Mr WALKERS with his Waggon & we took our corn home. in the even WM RODGERS came to uncles & I went with him home to this fathers HUGH RODGERS & staid all Night

I went from HUGH RODGERS home to uncles from that up home to my fathers.

Early I Left my fathers in order for to go to my uncles with some tallow for to send to Charleston (his Negro Boy PEET is for to sot off tomorrow morning for town with HUGH RODGERS & his sons) the morning being Cold I called in at JACOB FILES for to warm from that to my uncles in the even up to HUGH RODGERS for to see them before the start for Charlston & from there I rode to ANDRWS MATHEWS there I got 3-1/2 yrds of tow Cloth at 37-1/2 Cents per yd from that to JAS BECKETS & staid till morning (MARGRET BECKET)

was working in my Clearing till Late than I went up to brother ALEXRS with my Mattock to upsot & home to my fathers & a Little after Dark brother ALEXR came down to Dadys & him & I turnd out with our Dogs for to Catch game but was Disappointed for we sought but found not we turnd into his house & staid till morning.

Early I Left brother ALEXRS & went down to Dadys & wrought in my Clearing till even than I went to brother WMS from there to PETER RAPES for to see one Mr CURTES a shoe maker for to get him for to make me a pair of shoes. he was gone to BENJAMIN THOMPSONS I followed him there from that I went to SHADRICK ELKENS & back to Mr RAPES again by this time it was geting Dark I turnd in for to Discoursing of Miss NANCY RAPES Daughter I have had several Chats with her & yet she dosnot altogether Comply- However I mean for to Discourse her more yet for her heart seems for to be geting soft & I want for to make her Equel with the greater part of the maidens about. - in the Night I Left Mr RAPS & went home to my fathers thinking on the tender hearted creatures calld Ladys how the may be Deluded.

I went to brother ALEXRS again & met WM FREEMAN again & we spent awhile in the morning Looking after some wile hogs but found them not I went to my fathers again & wrought in my Clearing.

I wrought in my Clearing till Late than went over to brother WMS for to see how he was comeing on with his worke I Returnd back to my fathers and staid all night

in the even I walked over to brother WMS (& for the past time as the saying is) sot & Chated awhile - than home to my fathers.

I was working in my Clearing till even & it came on a small rain - than off I went to brother WMS from there to PETER RAPES in order for to visit Miss NANCY (his Daughter) just as I went there she was going of to her uncle BENJAMIN THOMPSONS for to stay all night & I went too & staid at Mr THOMPSONS all Night (NANCY RAPE) this nigght I insisted much for her to give me a Daniel or a free grant But a Daniel she would not give me it was not her notion- & as for a free grant for to marry she was afraid for to give me for says she I would be nothing the better if I did (& that was truth) However she give very plain hints that it was greeble with her but she still Doubted of the truth of my Discourse allowing that I aimed for to Deceive her.

Early I Left BENJAMIN THOMPSONS & went home to my fathers. In the afternoon I Left that & went to ROBERT HUEYS & staid all night

Early I Left Mr HUEYS & went home to my fathers.  In the even I Left Dadys & Rode down to uncles and staid all night

uncle Aunt & I went to HUGH RODGERS him & his sons & uncles Negro PET was Landed home from Charlston.  Late I Left Mr RODGERS & went to WM McCAINS & staid all night (SALLY McCAIN) ah for Love flowrisheth

Early I Left MeCAINS & went to HUGH RODGERS & met my uncle & Aunt & we got our articles that we got from town & went home

a Little space before the Dawn of the day uncle & I sot off & Rode to JNO McMURRYS from there to JNO JOHNSTONS & took a glass of Rum from there to Lancastertown (this in the state south Carolina) & took a Drop of Dram & was through town till even - we was the greater part of the time in McMULLENS & QUIGLEYS store I bought of them 1-1/2 yds of Coating at 2 DOS per yd 6 7/8 yds of Callico for 5 Dollars 1 wt of gun Powder 1 Doll 1 Doz small Buttens 1/8 of a Dollar- than we Left that & Rode to Mr JOHNSTONS again there we took another glass of Rum & I bought of him 3-1/2 yds of Linnen for 3 Dollars 4 skins of thread 12-1/2 Cents 1 lb of Lead 12-1/2 Cents one pair of stocking 1 Doll 25 Cents from there to HUGH McCAINS seniers there we parted uncle went home & I went to JNO McCAINS - there the people was very freindly the got me Dinner & very much insisted on me for to stay all night with them but my inclination Led me farther so I went on to WM McCAINS there I staid till morning (SALLY McCAIN) I was vast freindly Entertained- However I made a Complement of the Callico that I Bought this day in Lancaster to Miss SALLY.

I turnd into my Clearing till night & uncle & WM RODGERS came to my fathers (light rain) and RODGERS & I took a Notion for to Hug some of the famil sex and off we sot went to brother WMS from there to PETER RAPES the place we aimd for when we set out there we staid till near the Dawn of the day (NANCY RAPE) this night I got nearly a free grant for to marry which makes me for to smile in my sleve thinking what falsatys the gerls may be made for to beleave.

a little before the Brake of Day Mr RODGERS & I Left Mr RAPS & went to my fathers.  Mrs MARGRATE FREEMAN came to Dadys for to help me for to make a pair of Leather overalls for my Negro Boy - In the even when we got done I went to JAS BECKETS from there to MR LAWSONS store & back to BECKETS & home to my fathers I feel some what Drowsey for the Loss of Last nights sleep

I was at Dadys till even & THOMAS McCRORY & his son WM from Lancaster came to Dadys & I went with them up to brother ALEXRS (old Mr McCRORY is my brothers fatherinlaw) from there WM McCRORY & I went over to where WM FREEMAN not Lives on a plantation of my brothers & back to brothers & about Dark WM & I sot off again & went to PETER RAPES & got a Bottle of Whisky & back again to brothers & staid till morning

after brackfast at brothers WM McCRORYS & I sot off & went to Dadys from there to HUGH McCRORYS from there to PETER RAPES from there to brother WMS from there to my fathers again there we parted he went to brother ALEXRS & I staid all night

I went up to brother ALEXRS from there to another of his plantations where on WM FREEMAN now Lives got his wife for to Cut me out a short Coat than Home to Dadys about dark it came on a mighty SNOW the first we have had this season.  I feel very Discontented & no one knows it nor I do not know whether ever any one will know it unless I Leave it in the following Pages of this Book or some other of the following Books.

But pleasant day Early I Left HUGH RODGERS & went home to uncles from there to JNO SPREBERYS & received 16 Doll & 37-1/2 Cent that was Due to me from him than I returd home again & uncle & I went to JNO STEPHENSONS to CAPT ANDWR DAVIES Muster in the even home again.

I went to JAS SHANNONS for to see if he would Ride with me to Montgomery Count for to prove a Judgment against one JOHN HAMLET there I came home again & went to JNO HUEYS Esqr about the same business but he was not at home so I went home again

Early I sot off from uncles calld at Dadys & at brother ALEXR for there in to Mr. WM. POLKS in Anson County about 26 miles) there I staid all night (paid nothing)

mon 4 warm with small rain
Early I Left Mr POLKS & rode to person JNO CULPEPPERS on Rockey River I made but Little tarry went about a mile down the river & crosst & rode to old Mr. ROBERTSONS from there to Mr WM. CULBERTS the Constable that I had imploud for to do some business that I had against a Dam!d Raskel (JNO HAMLET by name) I Staid with Mr CULBETH all night (this days ride 29 miles) I was very friendly entertained

Mr CULBETH & I walked over to MR ROBERTSONS made but Little tarry till we went back & I took Brackfast with MR CULBERT than sot off for Montgomery Count about 12 miles from there I rode to a Little Shaklen Town on the Bank of the Adken River at the mouth of Huwary the hut of a place is calld TINDELSVIL I rod up to a jantlemand Door that kept Entertainment & calld for the hostler for to take care of my horse.  Imadiately he took my horse & I stept into the house & calld for 1/2 pint of Whisky & took a small refreshment of it than I Crosst the river in a Flat (the court house was on the other side in a nother hut of a Town called Henderson there I Staid at court till even but got no business done but was somewhat Acquenting of myself how for to proceed tomorrow- in the even crost the river a back to where I had my horse put up the jentlemans name was ISAAC THOMAS I got another 1/2 pint of Whiskey than calld for my horse & calld my Rackoning & it was 37-1/2 cents which I thought was very Reasonable- I went home with Esqr JNO RANDLES (about 8 miles out of Town) & I Staid all Night & was very friendly Treated was charged nothing

Mr. JNO RANDLES Esqr & I sot off from his house & Rode to Tindlesvil & I rode up to the Door of my Landlord that I was at yeasterday & the hostler was there Imediately & took my horse & as I did yeasterday morning so did I this Stept in & calld for a 1/2 pint took a refreshment than crost the river in the Flat to the Court house I give Loyer Lock 2 Dollars & he returnd the Execution to the Branch & ordered the Clerk for to put it on the Docket & give the Sheriff orders for to sell it- that is the Land of JNO HAMLET- this Day I saw a poor olf Ratched soul whoes head was Blossemed for Eternity taken out of the court house & Bound to a post & Whipt for steeling turkeys- (Dear Sirs for it Lookt very Redicules- Late I Left the Court & Crost the river to Mr THOMAS again & had 1/2 pint of Whiskey & order my horse for to be Sadled which was Imadiately done than calld my Rackoning & it was the same as yeasterday 37-1/2 Cents (now yeasterday I had met with an old acquentance at the Court (JOSEPH WILLIAMS now a Baptist preacher) & he Desired me for to give him a call as I Returnd Home- Therefore I Left Mr THOMASES in order for to go to my Acquentance- 8 miles out of Town It being Late night overtook me & it was raining & cold and very dark I Lost my way I got to an house but no body was at home but some Negros and I was than 3 miles from Mr WILLIAMS and I give one of the Negros 25 cents for to Pilot me to WILLIAMS there I Staid till morning

Early I Left MR SIMSONS & rode to my brother ALEXRS & there was a few hand Quilting 2 Bed covers I Stopt a while Than went from there to WM. McCAINS & staid all night (SALLY McCAIN) I was very kindly treated
