I give my mare Mr. GREYS horse then sot off for home came as far
as ROBERT HUEYS ---- HUEY os made but a short stay till I rode
home to ----- Directly went to my brother WMS made a little ---
went back to fathers wrought in the field till even- I had not been as
JN. AIKENS for a long time so I went there & staid all night

Early I went from JN. AIKENS home to fathers & turned in to Plough
for them to plant cotten

in the morning I Left Dadys & went down to my uncle FOSTERS from
that I went up to ANDREW WALKERS Esqr. it was a Law day with him,
& I had some business for to do for HUGH McMULLEN So when I got
my business settled I went with some others to WM. McCRORYS to
a cotten picking frolic I staid all night! ! But everything did not go
to my mind I had not much conversation with Miss & what I had I thought
Damd Little of. However I may visit her --- more

I Left WM. McCAINS & went to JAS WILSON's there I fell in
with some company & Drank Whiskey from that FREDERICK FISHER &
his wife went with me to my uncles there we Drank Whiskey & sugar & good

from uncles up to HUGH RODGERS for to converse a little while with
them because them and I was fimiler together in the even I went back to
my uncles

I Left my uncles & went to my fathers's ( a Black mare that I got from
ELI WEITS folded Last Night and the colt was dead in the morning)
Things are, it seems going much against me in Divers ways But if it pleases
the Lord for to grant me health & stringth I hope I shall get over these
mis fortunes. Being Discontented I went up to my brother ALEXR
& back to my fathers. Than down to my brotherinlaws JAS BECKETS,
made but Little but back again to my fathers from that over to brother
WMS. & staid all night (before night some rain in the night Sharp
frost)

soon in the morning I went from my brother WMS. home to my father¹s
& began for to plough my corn (sold a Black cow to the WHITE for
12 Dollars to be paid in the fall

I was ploughing amongst my corn. Although discontented & much Discouraged
for to Leabour--- any property I have so bad Luck with it.

I was ploughing in my corn in the evening when I quit my work I went up
to my brother ALEXR & back to my fathers

I was leabouring in the field till noon then I walked over to my brother
WMS. but did not stay Long till I went home. I had not been Long
there till word came How THO McCRORY who has been gone to the NEW
COUNTRYS this 4 years him and a number of other company was come to my
brother WMS. so I went Back again than we all came to my fathers
from that to my brother ALEXR & Drank Whiskey- about Dark WM
RODGERS WMS. son WM. sot off & went to JNO OSBOURN he
was paying a visit to OSBOURNS Step Daughter- we staid a while
than we returnd back to my brothers & staid till morning

the Company that I met with yeasterday & I sot off from my brother ALEXR
& I went down to my fathers there I made a halt a little & sot off for
to go to SHARID GREYS with my mare to his horse when I went as
far as PETER RAPS there I met with the company that I parted with
about 2 hours ago I turnd in a while with them. Then went on to GREYs
my mar did not take the horse & I came back to JAS BECKETS from
that home to my fathers

I went over to my brother WMS. did not stay long but went back
to my fathers

I was looking for my mares I calld in where WM. Mc??? now lives
on a place of WM. RIVERS this day I was working in my corn in the
afternoon- I went over to my brother WMS. made but little. At night
I went to my brother ALEXR & staid all night

I went home to my fathers & I was ploughing Amongst my corn altho Discontented
in mind- pleasant) I was ploughing amongst my corn --- I am hardest at
work Then be it contented & not --- --- well satisfied in mind then (may
12th 1798) I paid a visit to a certain young miss- a Daughter of WM
McCAINS?? SALLY by name & her I have frequently visited since I allways
got great encouragement for to come again till of Late. Her mind seems
somewhat Deviated & I know not for what- However I shall pay her another
visit & if she does not prove Loyal & kind I shall bid her ADUE Her people
has used me so well & sets so much beg me & I think much of them. Which
makes me Leave them that is if I do leave them with some reluctance-

I was working amongst my corn till the rain came on in the evening.

I was working amongst my corn sat 3 warm I was working in my field till
noon than I went over to my brother WMS. I sot off & went to ANDREW
WALKERS to JNO HAMMONDS shop for to get my Plow shear sharpt
it was Dark before I got my Irons done than I went home to my fathers

I went over to my brother WMS. When I went back to my fathers we
went to a new meeting that was in a mile of my fathers. There was 2 Baptist
Ministers Preacht one COOK & Counsel COOK spoke first- took
his Taxt 2 Timothy 2 Chapter 19 verses- Next spoke Counsel his text was
first Peter 2 Chapt 4 verse- I went to my brother WMS. from that
to my fathers

I was ploughng amongst my corn

I sot out in the morning in order for to Drive in my creatures to go to
my plough when I found my fathers my mares was gone- I expected they ware
gone to my uncles on the Waxhaw Creek. I went to PETER RAPES there
the told me that they had past about brake of day so I ---- hast from
there to JACOB FILES but they had not --- I turned my course up
files Branch there I found the ---- took hold of my big mare & sot off
for some- out ---- did the other took her course from home so I had for
to turn & follow her near to FRANCES ASHLEYS- there I got hold
of her and let the other go haveing no Bridle I began for to strip me
hickery Bark for to make me one; before I got done she Broke Loose from
my & off they went I ran called in at ASHLEYs got a rope & followed
about 1/2 mile beyound ASHLEY- I got up with them again got hold
of the little one put my Rope on & sot off for home again When I got to
JAS BECKETS I called in and took Brackfast from that home to my
fathers & good Sirs for I am wearied- In the afternoon ROBERT SIBLEY
came to my fathers for to sel me a Negro Boy that he had at his brother
ALIJAH & he wanted me for to go Imediately & see the Lad for he
and his wife was only come out of Virjana to pay a visit to his people
and he wanted for to sot off for home again. So I Sadled my mare & rode
Down to his brother ELIJAH with him- We Traded on till after dark
& could not agree there was 20 Dollars Between us- he askt 350 Dollars
for They Boy & I offerd for to give him the 350 but he should allow me
150 for the Mare I rode & he would allow me but 130- So we parted on that
& appointed for to meet me next day at WM. McCAINS & I rode home
to my fathers

I sot off from Dadys with some more company & went to the Waxhaw settlement
to HUGH RODGERS to a Frolic it was a sewing frolic & there was
a Number of people; I made but Little stay till I rode Down to my uncles
from that my uncle & brother ALEXR sot off & went to WILLIAM
McCAINS for to meet ROBERT SIBLEY according to Last evenings
appointment we waited till past the hour appointed & Mr. SIBLEY
did not come than Mr. McCAIN & us Returned to HUGH RODGERS
to --- frolic & froliced till Late. Than I went with WM --- {McCAIN}
his wife and Daughter home & staid all night (Golly Moses)

Early in the morning my uncle Foster came to WM. McCAINS & him
Œ Mr. McCAIN & I sot off & went to ELIJAH SIBLEYS for to
See his brother ROBERT about his trade & mine about the Negro Boy.
I BOUGHT the NEGRO BOY about 13 years of age & give him 350 Dollars &
I let him have a Black Mare at 130 Dollars. After taking Dinner with Mr.
SIBLEY we sot off for home Mr. ELIJAH SIBLEY & ROBERT
went with us to JAS WILSONS I calld in at WM. McCAINS- When
we got to MR. WILSONS we turned in and took a grog from that I
went with ELIJAH SIBLEY to JOHN STEPHENSON he was wanting
for to sel a horse to STEPHENSON we staid till Late in the Night
the did not trade then we went to uncles & staid till morning

uncle sent a Negro Boy & creatures for to cary me & my Negro Boy part
of the way to my fathers I calld in at HUGH McCRORYS from that
to JAS BECKETS from there home to my fathers. Late in the evening
WM. RODGERS & THO McCRORY came to my fathers & them & I
went up to my brother ALEXRS- RODGERS & I went back to my fathers
& staid all Night
sat 10 very cool for the

I went over to my brother WMS. & helpt him for to plant corn at
noon we got done & I went home to my fathers. Late in the even I went
over to JNO AIKENS & staid all Night

I went from JNO AIKENS to my brother WMS. & No Body was
at the house so I went on to my fathers- In the evening up to my brothers
ALEXDR made but little stay till I went back to my fathers.

I finished ploughing over my corn- Then for past time I went to JAS
BECKETS from that to PETER RAPES & Discourst his Daughter NANCY
in the evening I returned home to my fathers

very soon in the morning I --- over to my brotherinlaws JNO AIKENS
& helpt--- to Read off his clearen at Night returned home -- my fathers

I went up to my brother ALEXR, Drank some Whiskey then back to
my fathers Drank more Whiskey Than Sot off in order for to go to ANDREW
WALKERS Esqr- it was his law day I went to JAS BECKETS from
that to PETER RAPES drank more Whiskey after I Left that I little
ways I met some aquentence in perticular JNO. McCAIN & his wife
& the requested me for to turn back to RAPES so I did & took more
Whiskey Then I went to WALKERS took more whiskey- I cent tell you
for why but I have not eat nothing this day & drinking Whiskey so I am
Like for to get Grogy I Left WALKERS & went to old Mr. WM. PHILLIPS
there I called for my Dinner after eating I got some better I went to
WM. McCAINS & staid all Night (Golly Moses) I was friendly entertained
but it was agreed upon between her & me for to pay her but one visit more
soon that is this night 2 weeks

I Left WM. McCAIN & went to FREDERICK FISHERS from there
I sot off for home- I got Lost and the place that I first found my self
at was one MR. DRAKES about 5 miles from home from there I Rode
home to my fathers- I felt myself discontented- I walkt over to my brother
WMS but did not stay long till I went back to my fathers & up to
my brother ALEXR & staid all might (much rain)

I went from my brother ALEXRs to my fathers ( I have not one hours
contentment about that that I once thought I never shoud be troubled about)
from that to the Widow PHANNY McWHIRTERS to the Methodist society
When it was over I returnd back as far as JNO OSBOURNS it came
on a Mighty rain when it was over went to my fathers

O Discontentment. In the afternoon I walkt over to my brother WMS.
& back to my fathers.-

However I sot off --- my fathers people for to go to the Widow PHANNY
McWHIRTER for to hear MR. BROWN a presbeteren minister Preach
we called in at JNO AIKENS from that to the Widows & heard him
Deliver his discours & you may depend on it he made a Beautiful speach
(his taxt was the 14 Chapter & 15 verse- When I went home I began for
to plough over my corn but was soon prevented by the rain

WM RODGERS came to my fathers Last even & this morning him & I
walked up to my brother ALEXRS & Drank some Whiskey Then back to
my fathers (so much rain Last even that I can do nothing this day) from
there over to my brother WMS. there we parted I went home to my
fathers- Late in the Even my brother WM. was at Dadys & him & I
walked down to JAS BECKETS made but little tarry till we retuened
to my fathers

I was Ploughing amongst my corn when I was done my day worke (walked over
to my brother WMS. made but short tarry but retuend

I was Ploughing amongst my corn. My mind is not Satisfied but it is a
folly for to be Troubled about every turn of Bad fortune- perhaps that
that most Disturbes me at present may not be Bad Luck but good. It is
concerning of a thing that I have been persuing above 2 years. That is
courting of a young Miss & now it seems her mind is Like for to alter
& I know not for what. Therefore I hate it much

I Ploughed till noon then I sot off & went to my uncle JNO FOSTERS
& staid all night

I left my uncles & went to HUGH RODGERS for there home to my fathers

I was Ploughing amongt my corn till Late. Than I went to JAS BECKETS
from there over to HUGH McCRORYS & borrowed 7 Dollars from McCRORY-
Than I went over to PETER RAPES for to Discourse his Daughter NANCY-
I staid all Night.

Very Early I Lefte PETER RAPES ---- home to my fathers- Ploughed

WM gave him 10 Dollars)

I finished Ploughing of my corn this time

I went Down to my uncles in the even I Left that & went to WM. McCAINS
for that to whear ELI WEITS lives for to get him for to make me
a pair of shoes- From that to DAVID STARNS for to See if he had
a good horse for to Swap but I did not see him so I went to WM. McCAINS
again & staid all Night was very kindly enterned (SALLY McCAIN)

Early in the morning I Left Mr. McCAINS & went to JNO McCAINS
& Discourst Miss BETCY awhile Than I went to JAS WILSONS
calld in and took a Drop of Dram with him then I went on to my uncles
(in the even Rain WM RODGERS came to uncles & requested of me for
to go home with him to his fathers so I did and staid all night (----
RODGERS)

Early in the morning I left HUGH RODGERS & went to uncles & in
the even I Left that & went up to my fathers from that to my brother ALEXRS
& Staid all Night

soon in the morning I went from my brother ALEXRS down to my fathers
from there to JAS BECKETS from that to HUGH McCRORYS for
to pay him 7 Dollars that I borrowed about a week ago. I came back to
BECKETS & to my fathers (Rain) in the even I went over to JNO
AIKENS I had not been long there till I was Sent for my uncle & Mr
HUGH McMULLEN was come to my fathers & wanted for to see me so I went
home to my fathers

I went over to my brother WMS. frome there to JNO AIKENS
for to finish my Bridle that I began to make yeasterday. When I got done
I went to --- RICK ELKENS from that to my brother WMS again
Than to my fathers. It is so wet that I cannot Leabour in the field Therefore
I cannot content myself at one place

I had my mare brought up & I began for to Plough But the ground was so
wet that it did not do well so I Left off. THO McCRORY came down
from my brother ALEXDR (my brother is married to his sister) &
him and I sot off for to go to the Jews Store. When we went there we Bought
very Little I got as much (lace as would Ruffle the Bosom of a Shirt &
that was all we got for we Seed nothing that we fancied. We sot off for
home again & out of curiosity we calld in at I believe the mans Name was
WM. PRESLEY from that we went on to THO PRESLEYS there I
calld for 1/2 pint of Whiskey & we drank it & went on to my brother ALEXDR
& from that to my fathers. I turnd in to plought till Late then I went
to JAS. BECKETS & a little after Dark THO McCRORY ELIJAH MAYS
& ANDREW McCRORY all came to BECKETS & them & I sot off
& went up to my brother ALEXDR & I staid till morning

In the afternoon I walked Down to PETER RAPES from that to JAS
BECKETS from there home to my fathers

I sot 2 Ploughs agoing in in my corn. It is the first that I have Sot
my Negro Boy- the plough

I went to my brother ALEXDR from that into the woods upon the search
of my fathers horse for to Plough but by Reason of the wet I found him
not call in by my brothers again & home to my fathers it being wet so
that I could do nothing I walked over to my brother WMS made but
a short stay till I went home to my fathers. Late in the evening I went

very Early I went for to hunt my creatuers for to go to the Plough I calld
at my brother ALEXDRS. In the even it came on Such a rain that

I Sot off from my fathers for to pay a visit or I may Say visits as you
may read in the following Lines. I went to ELI WEITS for a pair
of Shoes that he was making for me but he ware not done. I went to WM
McCAIN¹s called in & took dinner with them. Than I Left that with
a promise for to return in the evening. I went to JNO McCAINS (there
I Discourst his Daughter ELIZABETH) from there I went on to JNO
HUEYS Esqr for to visit his Daughter JINNEY I converst with
her until the Sun was Down. Then for to fulfill my promies I Left her,
Returned to WM. McCAINS before I got there it was dark ha ha ha
I was met before I got in the door with the greatest joy that ever I was
met with before by Mc McCAIN and his wife they conducted me in
& there was my old uncle FOSTER & Aunt. Mr McCAIN had sent
for them & the ware come. Ah how friendly we was Interned this Night (SALLY
McCAIN)

after taking Brackfast with Mr McCAIN, uncle Aunt & I Sot of &
went home to uncles from there I went to HUGH RODGERS from there
to ANDREW WALKER from there home to my fathers from there up to
my brother ALEXANDERS & Staid all Night

I was Reaping of Wheat at my fathers when we got done we Drank Whiskey
& Deverted ourselves awhile- Than I went home with JAS BECKET &
his famaly. Discourst Miss PEGGY a while & from there to my brother
WMS. from that home to my fathers (JAS RODGERS being along)

I went over to my brothers WMS & helpt him for to Reap Wheat till
Late then WM McCRORY WM RODGERS & JAS RODGERS came with
me to my fathers from there we went up to my brother ALEXDR made
but a Short Stay till we returnd back to my fathers

I could not find my creatures before noon in the afternoon I was Ploughing
at my fathers for brother WM.

I was helping my brother WM. for to Plough corn at my fathers at
noon I went over to brothers (after dark a Shower)

I went to the meeting house that was within about a mile of my fathers
for to hear MR BROWN preach he give us 2 searmond- his first Taxt
was in the Revelations of St. John the 21 Chapt & 7 verses in the afternoon
his Taxt was in the sd Book and affore Said Chapt & 8 verse. When Sermons
was over I went to JAS BECKETS from there to my fathers from that
to my brother ALEXDRS & Staid all Night

Early in the morning I went to my fathers & was helping of my brother
WM for to Plough corn till noon. Than to helpin for to put Wheat
into the Barn Late I went up to brother ALEXDR & returned back to fathers

I began for to plough amongst my corn in the afternoon it came on Such
a heavy Rain I was forced for to Leave off. Than I went down to JAS
BECKETS & Staid all Night (MARGARET BECKETS)

JAS BECKETS a paid of overalls Than went home to my fathers & Staid
all Night

I went up to brother ALEXDRS did not tarry Long till I went back
to fathers again. In the afternoon I was Ploughing amongst my corn

time altho not So calm as I could wish. If health permits I am promising
of myself a day or 2 courising amongst the femals next week.

I finished ploughing over my corn again I have had 3 ploughs agoing this

I walked up to my fathers & Staid all Night

I was Ploughing amongst corn till Noon- Than I went over to brother WMS.
Chated awhile & retrd back Late I Sot off with Some more for to hear one
JINCKENS a methodist Minister preach went to JAS BECKETS
the place appointed for preaching there was but few people came he did
not preach but give us a Lector & I thought but Little of him - in the
Night I went home to fathers.

I went up to brother ALEXDRS & got his horse (in order for to take
a ride) I went back to my fathers from there I sot off the first place
I calld in at FREDERICK FISHERS from that to WM McCAINS-
Allowing myself for to converse with the Daughter awhile than for to go
some farther but there was so much kindness used by all the family that
I could not Leave that Night- Staid all Night (SALLY McCAIN) (However
this night She --- me her hand and promise for to be true and Loveing)

Early in the morning I Left WM McCAIN & rode to my uncles according
to appointment met by brother ALEXRS wife for to go with her down
to her fathers THO McCRORYS in Lancaster County Soth Carolina it
is about 8 miles from uncles- after Brackfast we Sot off & calld in at
JNO HUEYS Esqr- I converst with his Daughter JENNEY a while
because that She was kind & genteel- Than we rode on to THO McCRORYS
there we Staid all night- I had a lowed myself for to gone to Lancaster
Town that Night but Mr McCRORY was So kind he would not Let me
Leave him that Night-

The McCRORYS son HUGH & I Sot off from there for to go to
Lancaster Courthouse we went to one THANA COUSERS there we called
in & I turned into the room with his Daughter FEBY (& as I have
heard one Mr McMULLEN term it) I give her abundance of cheek wind
from that we went on to Lancaster Town- first went into MR QUIGLEYS
& McMULLENS there we took a refreshment & past the greater part
of the day through the Little Town- in the evening we Left that for to
go back to MR McCRORYS again when we went as far back as Mr
COUSERS where we came by in the morning the insisted on us for to
Light & we did & imedately our horses was taken into the stable & fed
& Dinner prepaird for ourselves & we was uncomely well used I never was
at the house before this morning. We went to Mr McCRORYS & Staid
all Night.

after taking Brackfast at Mr McCRORYS my sister in law & I sot
off for home had 4 head of Sheep for to Drive we went an as far as Esqr
HUGHEYS the we made a Little Stay & Let our Sheep rest from there
we went to my uncles & slept a while & from that home to my fathers. Upon
my word I have had a merry voige

I went from my fathers up to brother ALEXR in the evening home
to fathers & Staid all Night--

In the afternoon I walked from my fathers with JNO AIKENS & his
wife & Staid all night

Early I Left JNO AIKENS & went home to my fathers from there to
a meeting about a mile from fathers there MR. BROWN preacht the
portion of Scripture that he Spoke from was Mathew 5 Chapt & 8 verst (he
is a presbeteren) after Sermon was over I went to fathers Late in the
even I went up to Brother ALEXDR & Staid all Night.

Soon in the morning I went from brother ALEXDR home to fathers
again (alowing to morrow for to Return home to my old uncles on the Waxhaw
Creek) & was helping of him into the Barn with his Oats

I Sot off from my fathers in order for to Retuen home again to my uncles
on the Waxhaw for to make Brandy I went to AARON THOMPSONS from
that to uncles & Staid all Night

I was puting things to Right about the Still house till Late in the even,
than I went to HUGH RODGERS from that to JAS WILSONS. Returns
back to Mr RODGERS & Staid all Night
