ADAMS

Suzanne Adams 1633 SW Gemini Lane,

Port St. Lucie, FL  34984

TeacherG4@aol.com

I am a descendent of James Adams born on or about 1833in VA and moved to Monroe County, OHIO before 1855.  Both his parents are from Ireland.  His parents names are James Adams and Sarah Adams.  The aforementioned James married Anna or Hanna Sykes or Six of PA or OH.  Their children according to the 1860 and 1870 censuses are:  Sarah L, David N, Marshal V, Ruth A, Cora J, James, Ellwood or Ellsworth, William, and Ode J.

Sarah L became Sarah McDonald, and Ruth A Became Ruth Stevens.

This family moved to Sedalia, MO shortly after the civil war and are found in the 1870 census in FLat Creek.  In the 1880 census the parents cannot be found and all the children are either on their own, married, and the minor children are living with relatives.  My guess is that a tragedy befell this family and both mother and father were killed and all the children were forced to fare on their own and rely on other family until they were old enough to become independent.  If something did happen to the family, it should be recorded somewhere.  Maybe in old newspapers or records in your library.

In the 1880 census Ode Jane Adams resides with  an aunt Lutitia Morrow and William Adams resides with his grandmother.  David, Marshall (M.V.) and Ellsworth (E.M.) are all loggers in Montana in 1880.  It is obvious that the family met with some tragedy where both parents died of disease, or were injured and possibly were killed.

Any assistance figuring out what happened to this family and why the children were separated and living with relatives would be greatly appreciated.

Kristi Krug  kristidistance@aol.com

I would like information on Matilda Baker Mercer b.1841, Calais, Monroe County, Ohio; d. 1901 in Calais and her two illegitimate sons, John W. Stephen "Mercer" b.1876 m. Alice Hayes; b. 1883; d. 1941;m.(2) Dessie ?; b. abt. 1876 -and-my great grandfather, William Henry Stephen "Mercer",b.1878 d.1974; m. Clara Hayes,1901; b. 1882 d.1954. Matilda married George Mercer but had children with three other men after his death. I heard from a good source that she was raped as a teen. George Mercer, her only husband, (at least we think they were married) died in the civil war. She kept the Mercer name until her death. Was she a descendant of Captain John Baker the Indian fighter? Rumor has it that her son John went to the Ohio penitentiary for involuntary manslaughter for killing a man that tried to steal his horse. How can I find court a record of this or prove that it is true? I know that I am asking a lot. If you could find anything, I would be so very happy! Kristi

BAKER

Erin T. Crowe

poetrywaif@yahoo.com

I am not sure if you can answer my question, but maybe so.  My great grandfather George Perry Baker, lived in Ohio. He was born around 1890. His parents were born in Pennsylvania (or so it says on the census') His first marriage was to my great grandmother Martha Stethem.  They had my grandmother Mildred Baker who was born in 1912.  They got a divorce and both remarried.  George married Georgia unknown before 1930 and had two children with her. My great uncle Robert Perry Baker & my great aunt Edith Baker.  I am at a loss because I cannot find anything on them beyond what my family has told me. I even talked to my great uncle and asked him if he knew where his father was from, he couldn't, all he could tell me was that he was a farmer in Clinton, Ohio.  Though, I know by the census' that this is not the only place in Ohio he lived.  If you can help, I would greatly appreciate it, I just thought that since the middle names were so similar, maybe there would be a connection.  Thank you kindly, Erin T. Crowe

BROWNFIELD

Deborah Brownfield – Stanley

122 Whiting

Toledo, Ohio  43609-2047  Alohawahine75@aol.com

I am hoping to make family connections, regarding the surname of BROWNFIELD. Would enjoy hearing from any of the branches.
My great grandparents were: ROMULUS K. BROWNFIELD and JULITTA J. (WELLS) BROWNFIELD.  ROMULUS was born July 23, 1854-1855 in Ohio, county unknown and died February 23, 1910 at Woodsfield, Ohio. JULITTA was the daughter of WILLIAM WELLS and MARGARET (SNYDER) WELLS, she was born March 4, 1860, in Ohio, county unknown and died January 30, 1919 at Woodsfield, Ohio.  I believe that all of their children were probably born in Monroe County.
     Their children:
Elizabeth J. Brownfield - b.1879
William Clyde Brownfield - b. 1881
James A. Brownfield - b. 1883 (may have been called "Dink")
Nora E. Brownfield - b. 1885
Julia A. (Brownfield) Tuttle - b.1887
Rachael B. (Brownfield) Stephens - b. 1889
George W. Brownfield - b. 1891
Barbara E. Brownfield - b. 1893-1894
Bojella Roy Brownfield - b. 1896
Dalton Guy Brownfield - b. 1899-1900
Of the above children, my grandmother was NORA BROWNFIELD, born July 8, 1885-1886? probably born in Seneca Township. As far as I know she  never married. She had two sons: STEWART BROWNFIELD, born December 25, 1907 and my father WELDON KIRKWOOD BROWNFIELD, born July 12, 1918 in Seneca Township. According to his birth certificate the name of his father was WALTER MARICAL. I suspect that the spelling of his surname should be MIRACLE.
I have a page out of a date calendar book in NORA BROWNFIELD'S handwriting that she wrote "We came to Quaker City in year 1920 April." I believe that most of my BROWNFIELD relatives are buried in Calais Cemetery.
Also interested in finding out who A. R. Brownfield was, he must be connected to me. Grandma Nora gave me a pamphlet years ago that has on the front of it "Organization Day" 53D Infantry, 16 June 1955, A. R. Brownfield Col Inf Commanding.  Some type of program or event must have occurred for this to be printed up.

Mr. & Mrs. Archibald (Margaret) Cooper who resided on Oak Lawn Av. in the 1930's Woodsfield, Oh had a son one Homer M. Cooper age 25 when Homer enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1918. Cooper was born in Monroe County. I do not have his date of birth. Homer was Honorably discharged in 1919 with Surgeons Certificate of 25 percent disabled. Homer had a ham radio set that kept him busy as he was confined to his bed, when he returned from the war. He was very active on the amateur radio in the 1930's. We are attempting to ascertain what became of Homer M. Cooper. I have checked Social Security Death records but do not have a good match. He probably expired before social security numbers were issued. Homer apparently allowed his radio license expire in the late 1930's or early 40's for one reason or another.
Can anyone help me out on this, in a attempt to ascertain what became of Homer M. Cooper W8OIG. Thanks in advance, Sincerely Bob Ballantine, Warren, Oh. Radio project.

I just found out that my great-great grandparents JOSIAH and HULDAH DAVIS and their son Yager Davis (aged 22) were living in Woodsfield Center Twp. in Monroe County, OHIO, confirmed by the 1880 census. The census says that Josiah was 68 years old and a liveryman, born in (Greene Co.) PA. His wife Hulda(h) was 61 years old, keeping house, and born in Ohio. Their son (Isaac) Yager was 22 and a hostler, born in Ohio.

I was wondering if there were any property records and/or tax records that might show the years they lived in Monroe County.

I do know that they were living in Guernsey County, Ohio, from 1854 until 1867 (and could be 1869). They sold property in Guernsey County in l869. I have been unable to locate them in l870 so am hoping property deed records and/or tax records might help me to know when they lived in Monroe County. Thank you so much for your help. Dunn.  Because Dunn perished on the trip, historians never had a chance to learn anything about him, not even his age or where he was born.  But there was one clue in the record that he might have been from Ohio.  I would like to pursue this clue further.  I would hope that this mystery might interest some Ohio genealogists or historians, who might dig into local records, most likely from the 1830s to 1850s.  Thank you very much for any help you can offer.  Don Lago, P. O. Box 369, Flagstaff, AZ  86002

My name is Linda Easley (Iseli) Kern.  have been trying to track down my families history.  It appears that my great grandfather Bendict (Bendigt) Iseli (Iserli) married Maria Anna Alleman on February 10, 1876 in the State of Ohio, Monroe County. No. 133.   I believe the probate judge last name was Norris.  ( I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed the Seal of said court, at  _ _ _ _ dsfield, the 26th day of January, 1876.  (I guess that is when they picked up the certificate and then they married later.)

I have three baptismal certificates that are in some type of German maybe for my grandfather and uncles.  Johann (John) Benjamin Iseli b. August 27, 1876 baptised April 1877 Monroe County Ohio, Rev Adolph J Bartels Albert Eugene (Gene) Isel b. August 12, 1877, baptised April 1878 Monroe County Ohio, Rev Adolph J Bartels Henirich Wilhehime (Bill) Iseli, b.February 2, 1879, baptised April 13, 1879, Monroe County Ohio, Rev. Adolph J Bartels Ela Magdalenn Iseli, b. Novemeber 15, 1881, died February 1885.  No certificate Hoping you have some type of record.

Was hoping that there was info for censes or something on them.  I'm sure that baby Ela was buried in Monroe County someplace.  I believe that happened before they moved to Brown County, Illinois.  They also changed their name to Easley some time after moving to Illinois.

Hoping you can fill in the gaps. Or let me know who might be able to help me.  Thanks, Linda Easley (Iseli) Kern

My great-grandparents were John (H. or W. I have seen it both ways) Garrett and Martha (maiden name Hann or Hahn) Garrett from Monroe County Ohio. Martha was born in 1835 and died January 30, 1905. She was 69 years 10 months and 15 days at her death. John H. or W. Garrett was three years younger, I believe, although I have seen it as 1835 also. Martha was said to have grown up in Monroe county Ohio and moved to Indiana with her brother in law, Hiram Decker in 1857. She married John H. or W. in May of 1858. His parents were from Ohio also. I am looking for information on the both of them to find out who their parents were. I have found something very interesting in the 1860 Marion County Census. John W. and Martha Garrett at the right ages of John@22 and Martha@25 but they were said to be in Indiana by then. Is there someone who could track John and Martha for me in Monroe county? I am looking for information on Rev. J. M. GODDARD. Josephus had a son James Martin GODDARD.   James Martins is buried in Oaklawn Cemetery along with his wife, son and daughter-in-law. His stone simply reads J.M. I am researching my great great grand parents, Adam J Myers and Mary B Gray Myers.  Both lived in Center Township, near Woodsfield on the 1880 census.  Both of them reported they were born in Ohio, and an informal family history I have shows they were born in Monroe County.  On the census it shows that Mary’s parents were born in Maryland, and Adam’s in Virginia.

I am wondering if Mary may have been a sister of David Gray.  I have the following from family records: Adam J Myers (b 9/18/1840) married Mary B Gray (b 1842) on 8/8/1861 in Monroe Co Ohio.  They lived near Woodsfield and reported themselves as farmers on the 1880 census. They had 10 children, some of whom are buried in Jerusalem Oh.  After Mary Gray Myers died in 1886, Adam remarried Ella Clark and had 4 more children.  I have all the children’s names.  My records shows: “Adam Myers is buried in Moffets on Jackson Ridge”  “Mary B Gray Myers is buried in cemetery just beyond Sylvia and Ella Jackson’s farm, south of Jackson’s ridge.”  Adam J Myers joined the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. I found he enlisted Aug. 12, 1862; was wounded at Lynchburg, Va., June 18, 1864; commissioned Second Lieutenant June 20, 1865; but not mustered.  He returned to his wife in Monroe Co after the war, and his first child was born in 1867.  His 6th child was Albert O Myers- whose house I was shown as a child in Woodsfield.  Albert had 9 children, one of whom was my grandfather, Everett W Myers.  I am interested in how either of these two (Adam or Mary) came to live in Monroe county.  I am also wanting more information on David Gray to see if he is connected to Mary Gray.
