Richard B. Buchholzer (obit 1 of 3 – see obits 2 & 3 below)

Source:  The Akron [Ohio] Beacon Journal, Editorial; Thurs., Feb. 09, 2006

Richard B. Buchholzer Akron builder's generous spirit leaves an indelible mark.  Few people have left their mark so indelibly on the Akron landscape as Dick Buchholzer. From Chapel Hill Mall to Rolling Acres, his vision for the future took shape. Still, the impact of his life can be felt far beyond what people can see.

Simply, Richard Barton Buchholzer, who died Monday at age 89, loved Akron. Trips out of town, whether for pleasure or to lure business to Ohio, merely served to stoke his passion for this city.

He was born into business, the son of J.J. and Kathleen Buchholzer, grocery store owners in Newton Falls. The family later bought and resuscitated the Hower Department Store in East Akron, where Mr. Buchholzer learned the retail business from the inside out. He foresaw the need for quality nursing home care, rebuilding the closed department store into Middlebury Manor Nursing Home. He promoted inner-city development with the then-innovative Schoolhouse Antiques in historic Grace School.         He had a gift for real estate, and he and his father began to acquire land in burgeoning postwar Akron. Mr. Buchholzer had a knack for knowing where people would be moving, where they would be traveling, where they would be spending their money. Chapel Hill is testament to that vision.

But Mr. Buchholzer didn't measure his accomplishments in acreage or profit and loss. His greatest love was for the people of this city, his quiet generosity touching hundreds of lives.

He devoted more than 35 years to the Beacon Journal Charity Fund, which his father helped to create and which helps needy children with eyeglasses and dental work. He gave himself to many local causes, among them the Boy Scouts, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens and what has evolved into the Greater Akron Chamber. Characteristically, his pockets were always full of tokens for the carousel at Chapel Hill because he wanted kids to have fun.

Mr. Buchholzer never sought the spotlight, but built so his beloved city would prosper. It has.

Source:  The Akron [Ohio] Beacon Journal, Business Section;Wed., Feb. 08, 2006 Developer Buchholzer dead at 90. Mall pioneer changed landscape of Akron By Mary Ethridge, Beacon Journal business writer

Richard Barton Buchholzer, whose  pioneering retail developments permanently shaped the Akron landscape and economy, died Monday night. He was 90.

Born on Feb. 19, 1915,** in Alliance to a retailing family, Mr. Buchholzer was a primary developer and 50 percent owner of Chapel Hill Mall in Akron.

He was also a force behind the construction of Rolling Acres Mall in southwest Akron near the Barberton border. He owned a 25 percent interest in that mall for years, eventually selling his share to partner Forest City Enterprises of

Cleveland.

Mr. Buchholzer and Forest City had at least three other commercial ventures together, including the Chapel Hill Apartments and Middlebury Manor nursing home near downtown Akron. One of his more recent business projects involved the construction and operation of storage units.

``Dick invested in Akron and had confidence in the city's future at a time when few people did,'' said Akron Mayor Donald L. Plusquellic. ``The best tribute to him is the number of families who were able to be supported through his investments in the city.''

Mr. Buchholzer's first job was weighing produce at his father's grocery store in Newton Falls in Trumbull County. He was so young that his parents wrapped a butcher's apron around him and stood him on a box because he couldn't reach the scale, he recalled a few years ago.

When Mr. Buchholzer's family moved to Akron's North Hill, he worked at one of his father's meat markets as a delivery boy.

In 1932, his father, J.J. Buchholzer, bought the Hower Co. department store in East Akron out of receivership, and young Dick went to work as a salesman.

He began college at Mount Union in Alliance, but soon transferred to the University of Akron so he could spend more time in the family business. Mr. Buchholzer never lost his passion for retail. He went to his office at Chapel Hill Mall nearly every day until he and Forest City sold the mall and nearby stores in 2004 for $78.1 million. He was 89 at the time.

``What a ball of fire he was. What a visionary,'' said Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Robart, who was a friend of Mr. Buchholzer's. ``He was one of the dearest people I've ever known.''

Mr. Buchholzer contributed to the campaigns of Mayor Robart and several other area Republican candidates. Mr. Buchholzer's second wife, Francis Seiberling Buchholzer, has been a longtime figure in the Summit County GOP. He was divorced from his first wife, Merian, in 1975. They had one child, Richard B. Buchholzer Jr., who died in 1999.

When Mr. Buchholzerwas a young man, he used to take a .22-caliber rifle and head up to the 187 acres of undeveloped land his father owned on an Akron hill at the intersection of Howe and Brittain roads.

Once, he came upon the remains of what had been an Indian council circle.

Years later, when he was building one of the country's first enclosed shopping malls on that land, he remembered the ring. It occurred to him that the tribal circle was probably the closest thing those native Americans had to a chapel. He named his development Chapel Hill.

Shopping malls

The 75-store Chapel Hill, which opened in 1967, was to be the first enclosed shopping mall in the region, but delays gave Edward DeBartolo's Summit Mall in Fairlawn that title.

The mall, burdened by construction debt, went through some difficult times during the 1970s when massive layoffs in the tire industry shook Akron to its core. But the business rebounded nicely in the late 1980s, and in recent years has had nearly 100 percent occupancy rate, the best in the region.

Mr. Buchholzer was also instrumental in the building of Rolling Acres. In a partnership with Forest City, Mr. Buchholzer conceived a two-story showplace on another of Akron's grassy hills. He eventually sold his Rolling Acres share to Forest City but kept his eye on the mall, which has since changed hands three times.

Mr. Buchholzer liked to relax by playing golf at Portage Country Club, where he was a member. He worked on his game with a passion, said Rod Johnston, longtime golf pro at Portage. ``He loved his golf. Even when his swing was deteriorating as he got older, he'd be out working on it,'' Johnston said. Mr. Buchholzer attended the club's annual golf trip to Palm Springs, Calif., several years. One year, Mr. Buchholzer had a heart attack there. During the following year's trip, Mr. Buchholzer rented out a restaurant to entertain and thank all of the medical professionals who contributed to his recovery. ``That's just the way he was,'' Johnston said. ``Always thinking about others.'' Family friend and attorney Robert Malone agreed. ``He never talked about himself,'' he said. ``He was a great gentleman.''

Mr. Buchholzer was active in Akron community affairs. He was a longtime president of the Beacon Journal Charity Fund and helped form the Akron Progress Board, now the Akron Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Buchholzer's survivors include his wife, Francis, brother Bruce and sister Eleanor. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Richard Barton Buchholzer  (obit 3 or 3 – see obits # 2 & 3 above)

Source: Akron [Ohio] Beacon Journal; February 8th & 9th, 2006

Richard B. (Dick) Buchholzer, a man of vision, an entrepreneur, a businessman and community leader, whose career over a period of 60 years had a significant impact on Akron and the surrounding area, passed away on Feb. 6, 2006, at the age of 89.

He was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Alliance, Ohio, the son of Julius Johannes (JJ) Buchholzer and Kathleen Shaw Buchholzer. The family moved to Akron in 1923. Dick graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School, attended Mt. Union College, and studied law at the University of Akron. He served in the Ohio National Guard for three years.

At an early age, Dick started working for his father (JJ), who owned Hower Department Store in East Akron. Over the years he and his father forged a dynamic team of retailing, business, and real estate development. In the late 1940s they began acquiring land for development in strategic parts of the Akron area. After the loss of his father, Dick, with his partners, Forest City Enterprises, developed and opened Chapel Hill Mall in 1964, which Dick managed. The mall became known as ``The Friendliest Mall of All." Rolling Acres Mall was opened in 1975. Other commercial and residential properties were also developed.

With the closing of Hower Department Store, Dick had the foresight to turn the building into Middlebury Manor Nursing Home. He became a licensed nursing home administrator and managed the facility in its first years. Ever seeking new challenges, Dick bought the former Grace Elementary School, which he converted into an antique mall--School House Antiques.

In his later years, he became very interested in the storage business and planned, built, and managed two successful self- storage facilities.

Ever the advocate of Akron and the State of Ohio, Dick was a "Rhodes Raider" and an Ohio Commodore, joining with the governor and other Ohio businessmen on a number of foreign missions, traveling to Asia and Europe promoting Akron and the State of Ohio, which resulted in several companies locating in the Akron area.

Over the years Dick contributed greatly to the Akron area, receiving many accolades and awards for his community leadership.

He was supportive and active in a number of local organizations such as the Akron Regional Development Board, the Beacon Journal Charity Fund, Akron Community Foundation, Stan Hywet Hall, Leadership Akron, Blue Coats, Great Trail Council Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, and United Way, to name a few. He was a Layman Advisor to the National Unity Churches. Dick was a member of Fairlawn and Portage country clubs.

Dick was known to always carry a camera and take candid pictures of dignataries and friends who later loved receiving personalized photographs of these moments in time. He was also known to be an avid golfer.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Frances, and stepdaughter, Elizabeth Sturtevant. He leaves his beloved sister, Eleanor Buchholzer Erickson; his brother, Bruce; and sister-in-law, Edna Buchholzer. Also surviving him are nieces, Karen Buchholzer Stevens and Julie Buchholzer, and nephew, Mark W. Erickson. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard (Rick) B. Buchholzer, and brother, Wendell.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1361 W. Market St., with Rev. Sandra Selby officiating. Friends may call at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Richard B. Buchholzer Memorial Fund, care of the Beacon Journal Charity Fund, 333 S. Main St. Suite 319, Akron, Ohio 44308. This special memorial fund will assist needy children with orthodontic treatment. My Aunt Jan                                                                    By her niece Betty Kitchen

May 3, 2006

Although today we gather to “officially” say goodbye to Jan Latta, my Aunt Jan, I am sure that all of us here will agree that she will always be with us.  She was such a vital part of our growing up.  Although biologically she may have had no children, she certainly mothered my cousins David, Don and me, and the generations to follow.  We were always welcome at her house.  Bring our friends?  She’d say, “Sure, will be glad to see them.” So we did.  And she was truly glad to have us all there.

Although she never married, she has always been the uniting force in this family.  It was Aunt Jan who cared for her aging grandparents.  It was Aunt Jan who cared for her own mother.  And it was Aunt Jan who spoiled David, Don and me.  We (the whole Latta family) were at their house almost every weekend that her father was home from Chicago. I think this was about twice a month during my childhood. She cooked a wonderful meal, and there was much laughter.  I know she especially spoiled me.  I was a picky eater.  Dad used to make me gag down a big spoonful of Black Strap Molasses to supposedly make me eat.  It was used with cattle, but I’m not sure it was meant for human consumption.  I liked Aunt Jan’s approach better.  She knew that I loved chicken and noodles so she ALWAYS made me chicken and noodles.  The rest of the family having beef stroganoff?  Yep, but I got chicken and noodles anyway.

At family gatherings most of the adults would go in the other room and talk.  For kids, this is of course, very, very boring.  So Aunt Jan and Grandma would spoil us.  They’d play cards with us kids or some other games at the big dining room table.  We all enjoyed it so.  I got to stay for a whole week during the summers.  We had Monopoly games that lasted the whole time.  She would let me change the rules a little.  I didn’t have to get all the properties of a certain color to buy houses.  We did some gardening, tried to catch the “Grinnies” which most people know as chipmunks and explored the wonderful closets upstairs.  They were wonderful weeks.

Here are some stories that she shared with me that I think you will enjoy too.

Her father’s parents and many aunts and uncles still lived in Monroe County when she was a kid. The train ride then from Canton to Monroe County was 5 or 6 hours Usually her dad only took the three older boys, but she remembered one time when the whole family went down. When they got there, it had been raining cats and dogs.  It was so muddy.  Her dad carried either her or Vernon and Uncle Tom carried the other, and her mother (Effie) carried her skirts.  Aunt Jan was about 10 the last time she went to visit her Grandma Latta (Mary Jane) in Monroe County.  Grandma told her she had the most beautiful hands she had ever seen. Aunt Jan figured her Grandmother had seen a lot of hands in her day; and since Jan had just done her nails, she kept on doing them the rest of her life.   Mary Jane died in 1927.    And when I was little, Aunt Jan continued the tradition and did my nails too.

As a child Aunt Jan also always had to wear a bonnet outside and was not allowed to go barefoot.  (That bonnet must have paid off because she always had very smooth skin.  No wrinkles even when she was older.) The bonnets always had strings to tie under her chin so she could run with the boys without it blowing off.  Here is one–hope you can see her running across the grass with it perched on her head.

When Aunt Jan was little she loved playing with paper dolls.  Her mother would get fashion magazines but the pages did not show clothes in color so she saved the tissue paper and colored linings from envelopes to make doll clothes with color.  She never did like drab things--bright and bold for Aunt Jan.  Red was her favorite.  She played a lot with her little cousin Marie.  In later life Marie told Jan that she enjoyed reading so well because of all the many, many times Jan read to her when she was little.

I noticed on Aunt Jan’s old report cards that she missed a lot of school (36 days some years), and of course asked why.  She said she had very bad earaches as a kid.  They would drain, and she could not walk in the cold to school.

Both Aunt Jan and my dad Vernon spent a lot of time, especially in the summers, at their Grandmother and Grandfather Schaub's down the road from here in East Sparta.  (Dad would have been here today but is working through his own health issues.)   Aunt Jan always had to dress up for the train ride there to see her Grandparents.  She left play clothes at the Schaubs since she was there so often.  Once Aunt Jan lost her hair ribbon at Grandma Schaub's, and Grandma almost didn't let her go home, but she had school the next day.  It just wasn't proper to go on the train without your hair ribbons.  (Grandma had found the errant ribbon by the next time Jan arrived.)  Most weekends some of the Latta kids and Schaub cousins were there.  She told me about playing monopoly with Aunt Maggie, Junior and everyone during the depression.

There were no electric lines from East Sparta until about l928, and Aunt Jan remembered  how she used to like cleaning the oil lamps.  Grandma Schaub had a cow named Janey, so her mother Effie really did not like Janedith to be called "Janey."   Although Aunt Jan has never been as crazy about cats as Krystal, Valerie, or me, she did like Grandma Schaub's orange cat, Emily.  She also remembered the horse named Jimbo that bit her brother Don who was teasing him.  She was there when the armistice of World War I was announced on the radio.  She remembered how Elton and the older boys were celebrating by beating on the old wash tubs and creating a real noise.  Everyone was so happy that Uncle Wes was coming home.

Jan used to play dominoes and euchre with Grandpa Schaub while Grandma Schaub crocheted.  When they were older, she remembers driving out to their farm at 11:30 p.m. or midnight, after she had dropped off her Dad to catch the train  to Chicago, to stay with them.  She learned to drive at a very young age and chauffered her family a lot.

She went to Trump Road School then to an all girls high school - Mount Marie which later became Central Catholic High School.  Of course she had to wear uniforms in those days, and much of her class work was centered around the arts, Latin, Spanish, the classics.  She loved the opera.  I brought one of her oils so you can all see how talented she was.

When Aunt Jan was a sophomore her friend Angeline had a Cadillac and provided much of Jan's transportation and good times. Alas, the Cadillac graduated, and Jan's best friend became Hilda Schneider.  It was a friendship that continued throughout her life.  When she was at Altercare, she often told me how thankful she was that they could talk often on the phone and still see one another now and then.

She was also thankful that she was so close to David and Maxine when she came to Altercare and she enjoyed their Sunday visits.  It was a blessing when Krystal got a job there and could stop in on her working days.  Knowing that Vicky was always there for her too was a great comfort.  She got back so much of the love that she had given away all those years.

Yes, it always has been Aunt Jan who has brought this family together.  We have all learned so much from her about giving, about loving, about coping.  She will always be such a role model for us.  She went through so many difficult times.  She did not complain.  She did what had to be done, then went on.  I do think she was ready to go on now too.

Our five-year-old granddaughter Madison has been saying the prayer at the evening meal.  For the past year, it has always been the same.  “Thank you God for this food.  Help Aunt Janie to feel better.”  I think that Madi’s prayer has come through.  I’m sure that now she is feeling better.  Her body of late was such a burden to her free spirit.  I have hopes that she is rejoicing in reuniting with the family she loved so well, and we will see her again someday.  And I know she’ll be glad to see us, like always.  She’ll probably open with what so many of us have heard before, “Well, what do you know that I don’t know?”     By her niece Betty Kitchen

Riemenschneider, Richard L. Riemenschneider

Monroe County Beacon, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, August 10, 2006

Richard L. Riemenschneider, 93, passed away at Whetstone Gardens in Columbus, Aug. 5, 2006. He was born Oct. 25, 1912, in Bethesda to the late Dora White and Samuel H. Riemenschneider.

He graduated from Woodsfield High School, class of 1931, and attended engineering school in Indiana. In 1935 he married Evelyn Young and in 1942 they moved to Zanesville where he accepted a position with the USDA Soil Conservation Service, Muskingum County. His soil conservation work with ponds, tile drainage, diversions, tree planting, contour strips and water ways made him well known to farmers throughout Muskingum County.

He lived in Zanesville for 60 years, was a 65 year member of the Masonic Lodge and his favorite hobbies were golf and making miniature furniture from metal cans. His wife died in 1997 and in 2001 he moved to Columbus to be near his niece, Lois Chamberlain. He had an enthusiasm for life that touched all who knew him. He always found the best side of everyone in his world.

To members of his family, his natural talents and insatiable curiosity were legendary. This innate ability and self-confidence led him to excel in positions normally reserved for persons with far more extensive formal preparation. His curiosity about the world and how it worked led him and Evelyn to use their vacation time to explore every state in the union and travel throughout the world. His profound philosophy of life led him, as a young man, to be baptized into Christ at the Bush Church of Christ in Monroe County and to live a life of deep consideration for others.

His last days were occupied with finishing pieces of his miniature furniture in order to fulfill his promise to people who had admired his hobby. He lived life fully with deep appreciation of what he had been given. In March of this year he learned that he had cancer. His determined will and upbeat personality carried him through weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments with the hope for a few more years. When he learned that these treatments had not been successful, he essentially said goodbye to those around him and died peacefully in his sleep a few days later.

Surviving are nieces and nephews, Lois Chamberlain, Joan Shepherd, Richard and Gary Baker, Beverly Betz, Jack King, Shirley Jackson, Paul Young, Robert Young and Janet Sue Matinka and many great-great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years; four sisters, Bernice Moore, Kathryn Baker, Inez Jackson and Anna Lee Jackson.

At Richard’s request, there will be a private family graveside service at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Miltonsburg
