Descendants of Caspar Boettner

Brother of John Bitner

I first uncovered evidence of Casper Boettner in the Reichensachsen church records. In 1843 he sponsored the baptism of his nephew Casper Bitner (Caspar Böttner), son of his brother John. I also found his own baptism and marriage entries in the records. The baptism entries of both of his children indicated that the family emigrated to America.

My initial discovery of Casper in United States records was in the 1850 census. His year of immigration was recorded in the 1900 census. With that information I was able to find the Boettner family in a ship passenger list as shown on page XXX. They arrived aboard the Brig Bremen into Philadelphia on 8 January 1847. They traveled with several other families from Reichensachsen, including Casper’s sister Elisabeth Klebe and her family. Casper’s family included himself, his wife Cathrine Elisabeth Wetzestein, their daughter Elisabeth, and a 50 year old woman named Anna. A son Christoph, who was born in 1840, was not with them. According to a personal account in the book mentioned below, Christoph died and was buried at sea.

It is apparent that all the Reichensachsen families initially went to Berks County, Pennsylvania. In fact, they remained there long enough for Casper and Cathrine to have their son John born there in 1848. But by 1850 they were located in Wheeling, West Virginia (still Virginia at that time). By 1853 they moved to Monroe County, Ohio where they remained the rest of their lives.

In the 1850 census Casper’s family included himself and his wife, a 7 year old daughter Louisa, and a 3 year old John. Louisa is most certainly the daughter who was born in Germany. But her name in the church baptism record was Cathrine Elisabeth. The census indicated that both children were born in Virginia, but that is not possible. While it is possible that Louisa could be a different person altogether, it does not seem very likely.

Howard and Shirley Phillips published a book entitled Benjamin A. and Caroline L. Boettner Fox, Ancestors and Descendents. It contains a detailed history of the Boettner family, including some personal recollections. Their book states that Cathrine Boettner’s mother immigrated with the family. It names her as Catharina Wetzestein and suggests that she had married Peter Fouble. However, it is difficult to support that statement with the evidence I have.

First, the marriage record of Casper and Cathrine stated that her parents were Jacob Wetzestein and Barbara Vaupel (the German equivalent of Fouble). The passenger list for the Boettner family includes the woman named Anna Boettner, but no Wetzestein or Fouble was on board. In the 1850 census there is a female named C. Fouble living with the Boettner family. As the book states, Peter and Catherine Fouble are found in the 1860 census of Monroe County, Ohio. Since Cathrine’s mother was named Barbara in Germany, it is difficult to make a logical connection with Catherine Fouble. Since Vaupel is a known Reichensachsen name, it is certainly likely that Peter and Catherine were fellow immigrants. Quite possibly they were related to the Boettners in some way, but we can’t prove the connection for sure. I found a Cath. Eliz. Vaupel who immigrated with Anna Margaretha Bitner in May of 1849, but her age was listed as 21.

Please note that the following genealogy only includes four generations. I chose to limit the length primarily because this is not the direct line of John Bitner. Research on some of the lines might not be complete. In some cases I might have additional information about these families. Please contact the author if you are interested.
