Generation No. 1

1.  JOHANN PAUL1 AM ENDE (BATTENFELD)1 was born Abt. 16101, and died 23 Feb 1674 in Battenfeld, Hessen-Nassau, Germany1.  He married SYBILLA1 Aft. 16381,2.  She was born Apr 16183,4, and died 07 Mar 1678 in Battenfeld, Hessen-Nassau, Germany5.

Notes for JOHANN PAUL AM ENDE (BATTENFELD):

Tim Bottenfield says, "Research tracked the Battenfield/Battenfeld ancestry to the Town of Battenfeld in Hessen-Nassau, Germany. In tracing the Battenfeld line, the name Am Ende surfaced as the original name of the Battenfeld family. Battenfeld was used interchangeably with Am Ende for awhile and then taken exclusively, possibly having been originally used to distinguish the family from another by the same name. Locality naming practices were not uncommon in Germany during this time period. The Battenfeld name came from the Town of Battenfeld, Hessen-Nassau."

Richard R. Parks states that, "In the Evangelische Kirche Battenfeld Kirchenbuch ( FHL film # 1,340,524 p. 560, #73) he is listed as Johannes BATTENFELD named AM ENDE. Was a church elder of Battenfeld."

Notes for JOHANNES BATTENFELD:

From Tim Bottenfield's research we read: "Johannes immigrated to the New Land (America) with his wife, two sons, and three daughters in the eighteenth century from Michelbach, Germany (District of Heidelberg). He was required to pay the tenth penny at thirty florins, which enabled him to receive permission to leave Germany with his family. The family sailed on Captain Thomas Arnot's ship Two Brothers from Rotterdam, last from Cowes, England. He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 28, 1750.

"The sons of Johannes Bottenfield were Phillip and Hans Adam as listed on the register of the ship Two Brothers. The names of his wife and three daughters were not included on the ship's register (females were not required to sign ship registers). The following reference was found in the book Rhineland Emigrants:

(According to the Jacob Lischy Records, 1744-1769 (Hinke Collection), Adam and Elisabeth Battfeld had a daughter Catherine, baptized November 26, 1758; sponsors were Leonard and Catherine Sabel. This was somewhere in the York-Adams County area, where Lischy was a Reformed pastor. Philip Batanfeld was listed as taxpayer in Manheim Township, York County, in 1781 (Pennsylvania Archives, 3d Ser. XXI, 397). A possible misreading of the name involves the marriage of Adam Brecht and Margaretha Battesteld (sic), of Bethel Township, July 5, 1752 (Stoever Records, p. 63).

Tim Bottenfield states "Historical records of the Two Brothers register and other documents indicate several spellings of the family name; Battenfeld, Battenfel, Bottenfeld, Battefeldt, Battefelt, Bathenfeld, Battfeld, Batanfeld, Battesteld, Bottomfield, Bottenfell, Battenfield, Battenfelt. The most common original spelling was Battenfeld."

According to researcher Richard Parks, Johannes Battenfeld came on the ship "Two Brothers" captained by Thomas Arnot. The ship came from Rotterdam, through Crowes, England, and arrived in Philadelphia on 28 August 1750. He and his family probably settled at "Essex" tract outside Clarksville, Virginia, originally patented to Samuel Bell.

Generation No. 4

5.  JOHAN PHILIPP4 BATTENFELD (JOHANNES3, JOHANN PAUL2 AM ENDE (BATTENFELD), JOHANN PAUL1)37 was born 07 Aug 1722 in Michelbach, A. Erbach, Baden, Germany37, and died  in York County, Pennsylvania38.

Notes for JOHAN PHILIPP BATTENFELD:

J. E. Litzenberg, in a letter dated May 3, 1951, and located in the files at the Cornerstone Genealogical Society in Waynesburg, PA, writes that there were two John Bottenfields who came from Virginia into Greene County, PA. He suggests that each of the brothers who came from Germany had a son John. If that conjecture is correct, and I believe as of 12-10-01 that it is, then this Johan Philipp Battenfeld had a son John who went to Green Co, PA about 1810 and to Knox Co, Ohio in the 1830's.

Researcher Richard Parks states that, "Although Johann Phillip had ten children who were in America, currently the only descendants of the (Am Ende) Battenfeld families which we have traced down to the present day are descended from Johann Phillips' brother Hans Adam."

Children of JOHAN PHILIPP BATTENFELD are:

           i.  ADAM5 BATTENFELD38.

          ii.  BARBARA BATTENFELD38, d. York County, Pennsylvania38.

         iii.  MARGARET BATTENFELD38.

         iv.  JOSEPH BATTENFELD38.

          v.  PHILIP BATTENFIELD38, d. 01 Mar 1849, Manheim Township, Lancaster, York County, Pennsylvania38.

Notes for PHILIP BATTENFIELD:

When Philip was quite elderly he was found frozen to death.

         vi.  MARIA BATTENFIELD38, d. York County, Pennsylvania38.

        vii.  ELIZABETH BATTENFIELD38.

        viii.  HENRY BATTENFIELD38, d. York County, Pennsylvania38.

Notes for HENRY BATTENFIELD:

As of 1815, Henry Battenfield was in York County, Pennsylvania.

         ix.  JOHN BATTENFELD39, b. 176639; d. 01 Oct 18403939.

Notes for JOHN BATTENFELD:

J. If that conjecture is correct, and I believe as of 12-10-01 that it is, then this is the John who went to Green Co, PA about 1810 and to Knox Co, Ohio in the 1830's. This is not verified information at this point, though it is further substantiated by researcher Richard Parks.

In 1815, John Battenfield lived near his uncle Adam's children in Greene County, Pennsylvania.

          x.  SUSANNAH BATTENFIELD40, b. 28 Apr 1771, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania40.

6.  HANS ADAM4 BATTENFELD (JOHANNES3, JOHANN PAUL2 AM ENDE (BATTENFELD), JOHANN PAUL1)41 was born 18 Feb 1725 in Michelbach, A. Erbach, Baden, Germany42, and died Bef. 17 Mar 1804 in Loudoun County, Virginia43.

Notes for HANS ADAM BATTENFELD:

From Howard L. Lackey in The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families, we read:

"There is evidence that this Greene County family is descended from ancestors who were natives of the Palatinate or Rhine Valley, three of whom came to America on the British ship "Two Brothers," Thomas Arnott, master. This ship left Rotterdam and, after touching at Cowes, England, arrived at the Port of Philadelphia, where, on August 28, 1750, Johannes Battenfeld, Phillip Battenfeld, and Hans Adam Battenfeld took the Oath of Allegiance to the British.

No doubt this Hans Adam Battenfeld was the immediate ancestor of the family who settled on "Essex," the tract of land outside Clarksville, originally patented to Samuel Bell."

There is a Bottenfield Junior High School at 400 Hillcrest Road, Adamsville, Jefferson County, Alabama 35005. This school was undoubtedly names after some descendant of Hans Adam Battenfeld who first came to the United States from Germany.

Different researchers (Tim Bottenfield, Litzenberg, Richard Parks) have the wives and children of Hans Adam Battenfield differently. This is all questionable until further research is done.

Notes for JOHN BOTTENFIELD SR.:

The headstone for John Bottomfield says the date of death was 2 Feb 1805. This conflicts with the date the will was filed. This cemetery is on private property, mostly buried in fallen trees, new saplings, high weeds, and poison ivy. The headstone was half under a fallen tree. The owners of the property in October 2002 were Clayton and Cathy Albe. It is located near the village of Clarksville. It cannot be seen from the road.
