Monroe County Obituaries

1960

 

Thomas M. Stewart, 73, of Woodsfield, died Wednesday afternoon, September 14, in the Barnesville hospital following an illness of the past few months.  Mr. Stewart was born in Sardis, January 11, 1887, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Stewart.  Surviving are two sons, James of Beallsville, Route 2, and Harry of the United States Army, stationed in Germany, a daughter Mrs. Glen Miller of Wadsworth, four brothers, John of Clarington, Frank, Paden City, Edward Stewart, New Cumberland, and William of East Liverpool, four sisters, Mrs. Ellie Thomas, and Mrs. Ida Nolan both of New Martinsville, Mrs. May Bittle (Billiter) Paden City, and Mrs. Josephine Hoskinson of California, and nine grandchildren.  Friends called at the Bauer and Turner funeral home where services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. J. V. A. Trayler officiating.  Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.  [Calculated year of death = 1960]

 

Gerald Aldine Highman

"Since life, at best, is uncertain and death is sure, the imperative question is not 'how life shall be lived,' but how one chooses to die"

Gerald Aldine Highman was born May 6,1905, in Monroe County, Ohio, the son of the late Charles F. and Pearl Nalley Highman. He departed this life Mar.15, 1960 at his home on Lewisville, Oh., Rt.2, being at the time of his death 54 years, ten months and ten days of age.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leland D. Highman, a casualty of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Heskett Highman, three children; Harold, of Woodsfield; Merril Highman of Columbus; and Virginia Cecil, of Lewisville, Rt.2 and five grandchildren. Two brothers, Glen Highman, of Woodsfield, and Edsel Highman of Graysville, Route; and three sisters ,Waneta Dalrymple, of Dayton; Audrey Gatten and Mabel Hines, both of Lewisville, Route, also survive; as well as a host of nephews and nieces.

At an early age the deceased became a member of The Methodist Church. Reared in southeastern Ohio, he was associated in his youth with the W.E. Lamneck Company of Columbus and Middletown, Oh.  In middle-age he returned to the Lewisville community to engage in agricultural and business pursuits. He endeared himself not only to his family but to his many friends, who knew him by his consistant loyalty and constant good humor.

Funeral services were held in The Bauer and Turner Funeral Chapel on Sat. p.m. at two o'clock, with Rev. John Grimes, of The Free Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

 

Martha R. Gatten

Martha R. Gatten, daughter of Obadiah and Sarah Sparks Nalley, was born in Wayne Township, Monroe County, Ohio, on March 19, 1884, and departed this life on March 30, 1960, being at the time of her death, 76 years and eleven days of age.
She was united in marriage with John Gatten on August 5, 1905. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a good neighbor.
She was a member of The Richfork Church of Christ.

Surviving are her husband and five children, Floyd Gatten, of Woodsfield, Route 2; Mrs. Flavil Bates, of Woodsfield, Route 3; Mrs. Evalee Harold and Mrs. Winona Abricht, of Marietta, Ohio, and Mrs. Irene Stultz, of Ashland, Ohio.  Also, surviving are fourteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one brother, George Nalley, of Creston, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Nora Fisher, of Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. Laura Smith, of Oregon. Besides these, she leaves other relatives and many friends.

One son, John Junior, two grandsons, and one great-granddaughter, preceded her in death.

                         "You bade none the last farewell,
                         You said good-bye to none;
                         The heavenly gates opened
                         And a lovely voice said "Come."

                         Honest and faithful in her ways,
                         Devoted and true to the end of her days;
                         A loving wife and mother so kind,
                         What a beautiful memory she left behind."

       Funeral services were conducted by Minister J. V. A.  Traylor at The Bauer and Turner Funeral Chapel on Saturday afternoon, April 2nd, at two o'clock. Burial was made in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield, Ohio.

 

Armbruster, Paul F. Armbruster

ARMBRUSTER, Paul F., 55, a resident of Temperanceville, near Barnesville, was found dead Wednesday morning. He was born at Temperanceville on September 3, 1905, a son of George and Alice Armbruster. A veteran of World War II, he had been employed at Mansfield, Ohio, for several years.

Surviving are one brother, George, Akron, and two sisters, Mrs. Norbert Flutterer and Mrs. Vinton J. Gehradt, both of Columbus. The body has been removed to the Campbell Funeral Home, Barnesville. Funeral services will not be held, but interment will be in Beaver Cemetery, near Calais.

 

Baker, Etta Baker

BAKER, Mrs. Etta, 92, of Lewisville, O., died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. David Ludwig, of Donora, Pa. She was a member of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, and he Rebecca Lodge.

Her husband preceded her in death. Surviving are nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Gardner Funeral Home, Woodsfield after noon tomorrow. Services at the funeral home,
Saturday, 1:30 p.m., Rev. Donald Zundel officiating. Interment will be in the friendship Cemetery, Lewisville.

 

Boston, Elizabeth Boston

Boston, Mrs. Elizabeth A., 97, a life resident of Hannibal, O., passed away suddenly Sunday night at 11:30 at the Pittsburgh residence of her son, Ira D. Boston. Widow of the late Israel D. Boston, she was an active member of the Hannibal Methodist Church. Surviving, beside her son, are two daughters: Mrs. Dio (Pearl) McGinnis, Leon, Iowa: Mrs. Inez Norton of Hyannisport, Mass.; and four grandchildren, among whom is Mrs. Roy A. Byers of Warren, O., who had made her home with her grandmother for many years: and ten great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Daisy Baker, preceded her in death in 1952. Friends will be received at the Rush Funeral Home in Sardis. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

 

Allen, Mary Pearl Allen nee Mobberly

Allen, Mrs. Mary Pearl, 73, of St. Mary's ,W.Va. formerly of Woodsfield, died Thursday morning, February 18, 1960, at 12:15 o'clock, following an illness of pneumonia. She had been an invalid for the past twenty years.  A daughter of Milton and Julia Mann Mobberly, she was born August 20,1886, near Graysville. On July 30, 1904, she was married to John W. Allen, who survives.  Mrs. Allen was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ.

Surviving besides her husband, are one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Ruby Gertrude) Petty, of St. Mary's, W.Va with whom Mr. and Mrs. Allen had resided since August 1956; three grandchildren, Paul Zerger, Jack Petty and Donna Lou Post; six great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ray Coss, of Graysville, and two brothers, J. Foster Mobberly, of Woodsfield and Errett
Mobberly, of New Matamoras.

One daughter, Wadna Gladys Zerger, died April 28, 1943. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in the Gardner Funeral Home at Woodsfield.  Jesse Clayton, of St. Mary's, officiated, being assisted by Thos. A. Christy, of Woodsfield. Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

 

Schell, Rosa Schell nee Boesiger

        Mrs. Rosa Schell was born in Berne, Switzerland on January 23, 1873, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Boesiger, and passed away at a Lincoln hospital June 21, 1960 at the age of 87 years and 5 months. At the age of 11 years she came to the United States and settled at Princeton, Nebraska.

      On February 12th, 1891, she was united in marriage to Mr. Randolph Schell, and to them were born six sons and six daughters. She lived on the farm north west of Cortland all her life till four years ago, which she spent with her son, Eldon, in Lincoln and her daughter, Mrs. Ray Tally of Firth. She was a faithful member of the German Congregational church at Princeton.

        Mrs. Schell was a good mother, hard-working and generous to her family and others.

        Mr. Schell passed away February 9, 1917, leaving the mother to run the farm and care for her children. Five daughters and a son also preceeded Mrs. Schell in death.

        Those who remain to mourn their loss are Leon and Eldon of Lincoln, Mrs. Vida Tally, Firth, Harry of Roca, Vilas and Raymond of Cortland and Mrs. Mildred Wear, Vallejo, Calif.

        Also 20 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild beside a number of other relatives and friends.

        Funeral services were held at the Cortland Congregational Church on Friday afternoon followed with interment in the Princeton Cemetery. The pallbearers were her grandchildren.

 

Bolt, Freda Weir Bolt nee Kahrig

          Freda was born August 6, 1892, the youngest child of Ludwig and Catherine Gertler Kahrig.

          She was bapt. Sept. 4, 1892.

          1st. married Joseph Weir and 2nd. married a Bolt. 

          Died Dec. 25, 1960 in Guthrie, Okla. Of chronic lymphatic leukemia.

 

Falzgraf, Benjamin F. Falzgraf

          Benjamin F. Falzgraf, a native of Woodsfield, Ohio, died Friday, November 25, 1960 at the Weed County Hospital, Colorado.

          Mr. Falzgraf, a well known farmer who lived near Farmers Spur, Northwest of Greeley, Colorado, was born Dec. 18, 1880 in Woodsfield, O.

He was a graduate of the Univ. of Colorado Law School in 1908.

          He married Gladys Decker, July 8, 1908, in Greeley.

          Mr. Falzgraf was a member of the First Meth. Ch., Greeley Lodge 489 BPOE, and several farm organizations.

          He is survived by his wife; 3 sons and 2 da; Lt. Col. B. A. Falzgraf, of L. A. Calif.; John M. Falzgraf of Aurora, Lt. Col. B. G. Falzgraf, of Redlands, Calif; Mrs. Lee Kerns of Kansas City, Missouri & Mrs. Conrad Kunze, of La Mesa, Calif; 1 brother and 3 sisters, Sam Falzgraf, of Cameron, O, Mrs. Barbara Walton, of Mingo Junction, O; Mrs. Louise Metzger, of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Mrs. Mary Pfalzgraph, of Boulder, Colorado. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren.

          Funeral services were held Tues. afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Adamson Memorial Chapel. Interment was in Linn Grove.

 

Lura Olive Thudium, nee Baker

        Mrs. Lura Olive Thudium, 69, a former resident of Nankin Road, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday in the Castle Nursing Home at Millersburg after a lingering illness.

        The daughter of James and Alice Brown Baker, she was born Sept. 2, 1890, in Monroe County.  She was a resident of Ashland County most of her life.

        She was married Dec. 25, 1912, to Earl Thudium who survives her.

        Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs. C.O. Scobey of Wooster, Mrs. Harlow Kutz of Florida; one brother, George Baker of Ashland; six nieces and five nephews.

        Mrs. Thudium was a member of the Christian Church in Florida.

        Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday from the Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Miles Taber officiating.  Burial will be in Nankin Cemetery.

        Friends may call at Gilbert Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
