Leonard Verdugt, 75, died Thursday, July 6, 1989 at Hand County Memorial Hospital.
The funeral was held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 1989 at Reck Funeral Home. Rev. Fred Rosin and Rev. Lee J. Smith officiated. Pallbearers were Vincent Lumby, Lyle Williams, Roger Taylor, Eugene Porter, Francis Marshall and Leo Crownhart. Interment was in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.
Leonard Verdugt was born May 16, 1914, in St. Lawrence, Hand County, South Dakota to Peter and Maggie (Slycord) Verdugt. He farmed with his father. When the crops failed in the 30's he picked corn in Iowa and did some ttrucking. In 1936 he worked in the orchards at Yakima and also on a dairy farm.
He married Zona Ford at Yakima, Washington, October 10, 1936. They moved back to St. Lawrence in the spring of 1937.
Leonard worked for the W.P.A., helping build Pearl, Jones, and Lake Louise. In the spring of 1939 he started farming in York township. When his father retired in 1945, he and his family moved to the farm. Leonard and his family moved into St. Lawrence in 1952, where he was self-employed as a mechanic.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Zona Verdugt, St. Lawrence, four daughters, Mrs. Frank (Joanne) Lockner, Wessington, Mrs. Donald (Kay) Boynton, Covington, Oklahoma, Mrs. Jeanie Hannum, Elverta, California, and Mrs. Sharon Gortmaker, St. Lawrnece; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Reinhard, Pomona, California, and two brothers, Dale and James Verdugt, Sturgis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
