Funeral services for Ruth Magness were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 11, 1994 at Reck Funeral Home, Miller, South Dakota, with Rev. Ann Louise Weisenfluh officiating. Organist was Virginia Burgher, and soloist was Deanna Smith. Interment was in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
Ruth I. Magness, 84, formerly of Miller, died Sunday, February 6, 1994 at the Senior Citizens Residence at the South Dakota Human Services Hospital in Yankton.
Ruth Magness was born at St. Lawrence on October 29, 1909, to Ben and Gertrude (Sayer) Magness. She graduated from St. Lawrence High School in 1928. In 1930 she taught school near St. Lawrence, and in 1935 she graduated from Yankton College, Yankton, South Dakota.
During the late 1930's, she worked for her father, who was in the livestock sales barn business for several years in Hawarden and Laurens, Iowa.
From 1942 through early 1947, she lived with her parents near Ireton, Iowa. In the latter part of 1947, she moved with her parents back to Miller, where she was instrumental in purchasing and operating the old Vanderbilt Hotel through 1957.
She was active in music circles wherever she lived.
For many years, Ruth had been in frail health and was often hospitalized.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Avis Linn - Willet, Clarksdale, Missouri; a nephew, Dr. Leighton Linn, Cosby, Missouri; and a grand-niece, Mrs. Kristine Linn-Winneke, Madison, Wisconsin.
