Virgil J. Lips, 74, of 477 4th St. N.E., Huron, South Dakota died Wednesday, August 9, 1995, at Huron Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Huron, with the Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating.  Burial will be in Altoona Cemetery at Hitchcock, with Masonic rites by the St. Lawrence Masonic Lodge 39.

Friends may call at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron this afternoon and evening and prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Virgil Lips was born Deccember 12, 1920, at rural Hitchcock to Jacob and Anna (Paulson) Lips.  He grew up on a farm and was educated in Hitchcock.  He farmed north of Huron and owned and operated the Lips Construction Company.

He served in the South Dakota House of Representatives in 1957 and 1958.

In 1968, he moved to Miller and purchased the Magness Hotel, later known as the Lips Dining Center and Hondah Lounge.  He later purchased the Sunset Motel, Stein II and the Sears building.

On April 23, 1978, he married Mardy Holden at Miller.  They lived in Miller and operated the Lips Dining Center and Lounge until retiring last year and moving to Huron.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Huron, the St. Lawrence Masonic Lodge 39, the Scottish Rite, the Aberdeen Yelduz Shrine, and the International Order of Odd Fellows of Miller.

He is survived by his wife of Huron and their children, Jerry, Melvin and Larry Lips, all of Denver;  John Frenzel of Lebanon, Oregon;  Frank and Jeff Frenzel of Albany, Oregon;  Linda Lips of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sharon Wipf of Huron, Charlotte Estrada of San Jose, California, and Bonnie Wolberg of Minneapolis, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents;  five brothers, Elmer, Walt, Ralph, Lester and Lyle Max Lips, and one sister, Ruth Otto.

Pallbearers will be Tom Anderson, Vern Collins, Jim Hancock, Howard Peterka, Lyle Lips and John Frenzel.
