Funeral services were held in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Highmore, May 15, 1985 for
Grace Kusser with Paul Bachman officiating. Burial was in Immaculate Conception
Catholic Cemetery, Stephan.
Pallbearers were John Werdel, Ray Werdel, Bill Werdel, Jerry Suhn, Dale Suhn and Mike Ricklick.
Grace Cresentia Frances Kusser was born August 21, 1885 at Otterskerhen, Germany, to Simon and Barbara (Holnstiner) Kusser and died May 11, 1985, at the Highmore Nursing Home at the age of 99 years, eight months and 20 days.
She was baptized in the Catholic faith. She and her family came to the United States in
1887 and settled the first winter in Yankton, South Dakota. In the spring of 1888, they
moved to Stephan, South Dakota, where her father was a shoemaker for the Indian
children, as requested by Bishop Marty.
The Kusser family lived in a small log cabin at Stephan for a few years, before moving to a homestead east of Stephan on the creek. She lived and worked on this ranch and helped with the ranch work.
In 1912, she made a visit to Germany with her parents. When she returned, she went to
Sioux City, Iowa with a friend and worked as a housekeeper.
In 1929, she returned to LeMars, Iowa, to care for her parents, who were both ill. She
remained with them until their deaths. She then became a housekeeper for Father Joseph Schultis.
In 1934, she came back to South Dakota, staying with her sister, Elizabeth Werdel, who
needed her help with her children, following her husband's death.
She and Elizabeth moved into Highmore November 22, 1963. They made their home
together unti October 21, 1975, when she entered the Highmore Nursing Home.
Survivors include two sisters, Rose Erdman, LeMars, Iowa and Elizabeth Werdel,
Highmore; the family she cared for, nephew, Peter Werdel and nieces, Sister Marie
Helene Werdel, Loretta Suhn, Teresa Ricklick, Annabell Clausen, Leona Yanta and Marita Schuster; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Kusser and Lillian Kusser, both of Highmore and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Joseph, Max, Simon, William,
Henry and Theodore and six sisters, Mary Hilliard, Barbara Single, Katherine Kusser,
Clementina Kusser, Anastasia Wolf and Anna Kaminsky.
