Leroy W. Darling, 74, formerly of St. Lawrence, died Friday, October 5, 1984, in Manteca, California, after a long illness.
The funeral was October 9 at Church of Latter Day Saints, Manteca, and committal was in Park View Cemetery there.
A native of South Dakota, Darling was born August 16, 1910, the son of a Methodist
In 1934, he was employed by the school at St. Lawrence and formed a band there. He
then went to the University of Idaho where he received his mater's degree. He married
Frances Abbott of St. Lawrence October 7, 1938.
He taught in Fairfield, Washington, Irrigon, Oregon, and Sunnyside, Washington. In 1953, he moved to Manteca and was band director for Manteca High School for 23 years. He helped organize the California Band Director's Association and served as the first chairman.
Survivors include his wife of Manteca; two sons, Leroy, Jr. of Gilroy, California, and Don,
Modesto, California; three daughters, Brenda Crockett of Manteca, Teddie Lurie of
Connecticut, and Suzanney Syrie of Manteca; two sisters, Azile Larson of South Dakota, Ruth Meyer of Texas; and 16 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Adelaide "Addie" Avery in 1961.
