Elmer V. Vanburg, 95, Rapid City, died Saturday, January 14, 1995 at Westhills Health Care Facility in Rapid City.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 17, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Miller officiating. Burial was at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, with military honors by American Legion Post 22, Rapid City.
He was born on June 2, 1899 in Hand County, to Swedish imigrant parents, John L. & Celia (Pierce) * Danburg. He lived in St. Lawrence until 1918 when enlisting in World War I as an airplane mechanic.
He married Florence Kelly in 1921. They lived in and near Miller, working as an automobile mechanic until 1942. They then moved to Rapid City where he was employed at Ellsworth AFB for 23 years, retiring as Assistant Fire Chief in 1965.
He was very active in American Legion, was charter member of Canyon Lake Senior Ceneter, NARF and member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Danburg of Rapid City; three daughters, Lorraine Schweppe of Eugene, Oregon, Maxine Heffron of Rapid City, and Marlene Gilbert of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Genevieve Rutherford in 1992; and fourteen brothers and sisters.
