Dola June Carr Wilson, 98, died December 24, 2004, in the Loma Linda University Medical Center, Loma Linda, Calif., two weeks after suffering a stroke.
The funeral service and burial were in Loma Linda. Presiding at the service was her former pastor, Buz Starrett, of Yucaipa, Calif.
Dola was born June 12, 1906, to Ernest W. and Sarah E. (Nass) Carr, the ninth of 10 children, on the family's homestead in Gilbert township northeast of Miller, S.D., and she died just one and one-half years shy of a century.
Her father was an original pioneer settler of Hand County, and was well known for his
purebred shorthorn cattle and Percheron horses, and his involvement in the community.
When she was in the eighth grade, she won a purple ribbon for her baby beef at the State Fair in Huron, winning the state championship and a free trip to Chicago.
Dola married Gerald Wilson on December 11, 1926, in Sioux Falls, where she was attending Nettleton Business College. After living in Sioux Falls, the couple moved back to the farm, about a quarter of a mile from where Dola grew up. It was there that their children were born.
Dola wrote the local Gilbert-York Township news for The Miller Press for many years, and was also a 4-H leader for several years.
In 1951 they moved to Lincoln, Neb., where they lived for 10 years, before moving to California to be near their children and grandchildren. Her husband of 63 years preceded her in death September 25, 1989, at the age of 89.
Dola had a strong commitment to her faith and was always active in church work. She and her husband especially enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends. They traveled to almost every state in the union, including Hawaii, and also visited much of Canada. She had wonderful memories of their travels together.
Dola's life was filled with many friends and she always had a kind word for everyone. She will be remembered by those who knew her best for being kind, deeply caring and enthusiastic about life. She was devoted to her family, she loved doing for others, making people laugh, and cheering everyone up.
She is survived by two children, Bonnie Lou Kunkle of Glendale, Calif., and Dwight Wilson of Sun City, Calif.; five grandsons and six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Her husband, Gerald; two infant daughters, Darlene and Dotha Gail; her parents; and nine brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
