Dr. William Harlan Weiblen, 85, of Dubuque, Iowa, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at
Services were held Wednesday, April 21, in the Loehe Chapel at Wartburg Theological
Seminary. Burial was at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
William Weiblen was born March 2, 1919 in Miller, S.D. to George and Anna (Bellin)
William was joined in marriage to Ilah Anderson on May 30, 1943. He graduated from
Wartburg College, Waverly, Ia. in 1940 and he received his Bachelor of Divinity from
Wartburg Theological Seminary in 1943, his Master of Divinity from Harvard University in
1956 and his Doctorate of Theology from the Friederich Alexander University, Erlangen,
Germany in 1961.
He served congregations in Bryan and Ney, Ohio; Waverly, Iowa; and was a chaplain in
the United Stated Air Force.
He began in 1960 as a professor at Wartburg Theological Seminary. He served as
president of Wartburg Theological Seminary from 1971 until his retirement as president
in 1983. He continued to teach until his retirement as professor and president emeritus
He is survived by his wife, Ilah Weiblen of Dubuque; a son, William (Barbara) Weiblen of
Hudson, Mass.; two daughters, Carolyn (Bob) Gelpke of Ann Arbor, Mich. and Faith
(Donald) Trapp of Plano, Texas; four grandchildren and one great-grandson; two
brothers, Donovan and Paul Weiblen; and one sister, Dorothy Wangen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, John and Richard
In lieu of flowers a Rev. Dr. William H. Weiblen memorial fund has been established.
