Carol Ann Vander Waal, 63, of Albert Lea, Minn., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at home
peacefully, with her husband at her side, after eight years with Alzheimers Disease.
A memorial service was held January 5 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, with
Pastor Curtis Zieske officiating.

Carol was born May 25, 1940, in Wessington, S.D. to William and Alice (McBride)
O'Neal. She graduated from Wessington High School in
1958 and  from the two-year
Huron Business College.

She married John Vander Waal August 7, 1960, in Huron. She had lived in Wessington
Springs and Watertown, S.D., Ft. Dodge, Iowa, and Gaylord, Minn. They moved to Albert
Lea in 1977.

Carol was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was in the choir and was a youth
leader at Gaylord, Minn., and was active in the ladies' church groups. She had been a
bank teller and legal secretary, and then worked for 18 years at Albert Lea Medical
Center in Patient Accounts.

She had been a 4-H leader, she played volleyball, was a card club member, and an
elementary room mother at Lakeview Elementary. She was also a member of the
Women of the Moose Club. She enjoyed walking and cross stitching, and she took part
in many sports. She was a daycare provider for her grandchild, Bryn Woodside.

Carol is survived by her husband John, Albert Lea; daughters Ronalee (Chris) Johnsen
of Duluth, Minn., Roxann Clayton of Chaska, Minn., Roberta (Paul) Woodside of Albert
Lea; grandchildren, Rikki and Ryland Nelson, Storm Johnsen, Courtney and Katrina
Belton, Benjamin and Bryn Woodside; brothers and sister, Lyle (Lavonne) O'Neal of
Andover, Minn., Darold (Jean) O'Neal of Rapid City, Margaret (Bernie) Kemper of Aitkin,
Minn., Duane (Deb) O'Neal of Wessington, and Bill (Helen) O'Neal of Chapel Hill, N.C.;
and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
