Ila McKown, a resident of Montesano, Wash., died at her home following a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, Oct. 29, 2004 at the age of 83.
A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at the Wynooche Cemetery in Montesano.
Ila Hickcox was born December 30, 1920 in Ree Heights, S.D, to Milton and Frances (Lingscheit) Hickcox. She had lived in Miller and graduated from Ree Heights High School in 1939.
On May 25, 1945 she and Joseph Leonard McKown were married in Aberdeen. Joseph died in 1976.
Following the death of her husband, Mrs. McKown went to work at St. Joseph's Hospital in Aberdeen. She had worked in the kitchen at the hospital for 10 years, retiring in 1987.
She enjoyed working in her garden and crocheting. She was always willing to help others.
Survivors include her daughter, Diane Odenthal-Sawtell of Shoreline, Wash.; a brother, Robert Hickcox of Bismarck, N.D.; a sister, Mary Mattke of Huron; and two grandchildren; Brian Michael Lee Odenthal of Mountlake Terrace, Wash. and her granddaughter, Angela Odenthal. Her granddaughter moved from Seattle, Wash., when Ila became ill to stay and help care for her in Montesano.
Her sister, Ruth Hickcox, died as a child.
