LeRoy McGirr, age 82, of Wessington, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004 at the De Smet Memorial Hospital.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6 at the Wessington Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Allen Sager officiating. Burial will be in the Wessington Cemetery with Masonic rites by the Wessington Masonic Lodge and military rites by the American Legion Watson-Krauter Post #110 of Wessington. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 at the Kuhler Funeral Home, Huron, and prior to the service at the church on Wednesday morning. The family will be present at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.
LeRoy McGirr was born September 21, 1922 in Whiteside Township, rural Wessington, to James and Sophia (Lakner) McGirr. He graduated from Wessington High School and served with the U.S. Marines during World War II.
He was united in marriage to Janice Hayes on January 12, 1947 in Alpena. They lived in the Wessington area and operated a farm, a plumbing business and a hardware store. He devoted thirty years to the publishing business, where he was the editor of both the Times Enterprise and the Wolsey News.
In January 2000, they moved to Huron. He was a resident of the De Smet Good Samaritan Center for the past two years.
LeRoy was a member of the Wessington Community Club, the Wessington Fire Fighters, the Watson-Krauter American Legion Post #110, the Masonic Lodge, James Valley Westerners Shrine and the South Dakota Newspaper Association.
He was an active community member and had served as finance officer, city commissioner, and mayor. He was instrumental in initiating the planning and construction of the Wessington gymnasium and devoted time, energy and support to many other community projects. LeRoy was a certified private pilot and enjoyed many hours of flying his plane for pleasure.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Janice, in 2001.
Grateful for having shared his life are his sons, Michael, of San Francisco, Calif., Kenneth (MaryLou), of Sturgis, David (Linda) of Huron, and Jeffrey (Michele), of Huron; five grandchildren, Bradley (Laura) McGirr, Sara McGirr, Matthew McGirr, Kayla (Chris) Evans, and Kristi McGirr; two great-grandchildren, Jett and Jazzlyn McGirr; and one brother, Daryl McGirr, of Clifton, Colo.
