Mary Jo May, 65, of Highmore, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at the Highmore Health
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 21 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Highmore,
with Fr. John Short officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Mary Jo May was the oldest daughter of Merl R. and Mary A. (Creagh) May. She was
born January 7, 1939, at Faulkton. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's
Catholic Church in Faulkton.
She attended the Staufer Rural School in Hand County until the death of her father in
1950. She graduated from Orient High School in 1957.
After graduation, she worked for the Western Telephone Company in Faulkton as a
switchboard operator, until the dial system was implemented. She then worked as a
babysitter for families in Hand, Hyde and Faulk Counties. She moved to Highmore in
She was a member of the Catholic Daughters in Faulkton and Highmore. She was a
member of St. Martha's Altar Group and served as its treasurer for several years. She
was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Highmore. She entered the
Highmore Health Care Center in 1983.
She is survived by three sisters, Patty (John) Vlcek of Rapid City, Jeanie Muehl of
Garden Grove, Calif., and Geri (Bob) Duval of Mounds View, Minn.; one brother, Robert
J. May, Boulder, Colo.; 15 nieces and nephews; 25 grandnieces and grandnephews;
and one great-great-grandnephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one niece, Jeana Vlcek; one nephew,
Nathan Vlcek; and one great-niece, Amber Duval.
