Howard L. Lettau, 78, of Miller, S.D., and formerly of Highmore, died Saturday, May 29,
2004 at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 3 at 1 p.m. at Reck Funeral Home in Miller
with the Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial was in the Black Hills National Cemetery,
Sturgis, on Friday, June 4.
Honorary pallbearers were George Sharp, Don Matre, Ron Remily, Lien Marso, Phil
Brown and Dale Wurts.
Howard LeRoy Lettau was born May 22, 1926 to Joel and Adelia (Boger) Lettau at
Garrison, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Harrold, S.D., graduating from Harrold High School in 1945.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952, spending most of his time in Germany. He
was a member of the Frank Vopat American Legion Post #35.
On January 16, 1954, he married Carol Wurts in Highmore. They had two children, Lisa
Much of his life was spent in the Highmore area before moving to Miller, where he
continued to reside until the time of his death.
He enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and loved to golf. He was a member
and officer of the Highmore Golf Course and served with the Highmore Volunteer Fire
Survivors include a daughter, Lisa (Dale) Christensen of Sturgis; a son, Joel (Vicki)
Lettau of Miller; four grandchildren, Laycee, Blayne, Logan and Brooke; a sister, Delores
Brown of Highmore; a brother, Harlen "Duffer" Lettau of Thorton, Colo.; and several
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
