Mrs. Versal (Mabel) Krause, age 89, of Huron and formerly of Wessington, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004 at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7th at the First Presbyterian Church at Wessington with the Rev. Allen Sager officiating. Burial will be at the Wessington
Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday afternoon.

Mabel Krause was born Mabel Agnes Bonnes on January 25, 1915, to Fred W. and Georgia Anna (Bartie) Bonnes on a farm near Wolsey. She was educated at the rural Gose School and in the Wolsey public school system.

As a young woman, Mabel enjoyed participating in community sports, especially softball, and played on the All-Beadle County women's softball team in the 1930's. In later years, she won many awards for her baking at the Beadle County Crop Show and the South Dakota State Fair.

On December 12, 1936, Mabel married C. Versal Krause in the American Lutheran Church at Huron. They lived on the Krause family farm in Sand Creek Township, Beadle County, until 1977 when they moved into Wessington. They moved to Huron in 1994.

Mabel served on the Sand Creek School Board and as a township assessor. She was employed at the South Dakota State Fair for 18 years as assistant concessions superintendent.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Wessington and active in Presbyterian Women, serving as an officer on the local and state level. She had been a Bible school and Sunday school teacher.

In recent years, Mabel and her husband had volunteered as campground hosts at Farm Island State Recreation Area near Pierre.

She is survived by her husband Versal of Huron; a daughter and son-in-law, Janelle and Dan Toman of Pierre; one sister, Hazel Dietz of Huron; and 21 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Walter, Emil, Laurence (Stub) and Richard Bonnes; two sisters, Margaret Moldrem and Betty Bonnes; three nieces, Cheryl Bonnes, Kathleen Dietz and Sharon Constantine; and two nephews, Loren and Fred Bonnes.
