Robert E. Holt, 87, of Miller, S.D., died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Miller with the Rev. Kent Atkinson officiating. Burial was in the G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller. Reck Funeral Home, Miller, was in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers were Warner and Theron Holt, Danny Falls, Steve Danburg, Lyle Williams and Steve Ford.

Robert Edwin Holt was born April 4, 1917 to Theron Lee and Ellen (Morgan) Holt at Manilla, Iowa. He farmed with his brother Sheldon until 1959 when he moved with his family to Arizona. He married Virginia (Jones) Holt in Amarillo, Texas, where he was a civilian instructor for the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He attended grade school in Park Township and high school in Orient and Miller. He attended college in Aberdeen and Brookings. He worked at Shades of Arizona, a lighting company in Phoenix, and also worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office for more than 25 years in Scottsdale, Arizona.

He moved to Miller in 1994 when his wife, Virginia, died and lived with his daughter, Vera Dale.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church but had been attending the First Baptist Church for several years and made many friends. He had many friends and loved everyone. He was a devoted, loving father, grandfather, husband, uncle, great-uncle and cousin. He was his daughter's best friend and loved to give hugs to all and told his family every morning he loved them and hugged them.

Survivors include one daughter, Vera Dale of Miller; one son, Arth Holt of Chamberlain; one grandson, Rob Dale of Madison; one sister-in-law, Mabel Holt of Orient; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; his double cousins and his very best friend, Danny Falls of Scottsdale, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theron Lee and Ellen Holt; his wife; an infant brother, Victor; and a brother, Sheldon (Virginia) Holt.
