Viola Heezen, 89, of Lynden, Washington, and former Miller resident, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, Washington.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Gillies Funeral Home in Lynden with Pastor William VandenBos officiating. Burial followed in Lynden Cemetery.

The daughter of Elias and Viola (Day) Stinson, Viola was born in Ottumwa, S.D. on January 10, 1915.  She grew up and graduated from high school in Ottumwa and on July 5, 1935 was married to Dick Heezen in Mitchell. They farmed for many years in the Miller area and then moved to Blaine, Wash. in 1964.

Viola was employed at a number of fish processing companies in Blaine and following her retirement was very active at the Blaine Senior Center.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Blaine and enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, cats, crossword puzzles and reading. Viola loved to travel and was knownfor leaving at a moment's notice to visit any family members (sometimes for six months). She was also admired for her love, courage and appreciation for life. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.

Viola is survived by her children, all of whom were born in South Dakota: Norma (Donnie) Reimann of Miller, Irene Owens of Spokane. Wash., Ann Wiebe of Blaine, Wash., Richard (Teresa) Heezen of Spokane, Wash., Ben (Kathleen) Heezen of Lynden, Wash., and Bob (Gail) Heezen of Las Vegas, Nev.; 24 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; sister Marie Gartner of Kadoka, S.D., and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dick in 1992; daughter Naida Weed in 1998; two brothers and three sisters.

Viola's family requests memorials be made to the Christian Health Care Center, 855 Aaron Dr., Lynden, WA 98264.
