Vivian D. Hammill, 75, of Miller, S.D., died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004 at Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.
Her funeral service was Friday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Miller with the Rev. David Andrews officiating. Burial was in Morningside Cemetery, Ree Heights.
Casketbearers were Craig, Jeff and Todd Tollefson, Brandon and Lee Hammill and Tami Gross. Honorary casketbearers were Michael and Joni Hammill, Randy, Keven, Tyler, Kelsey and Kayla Gross and Curtis Henson.
Vivian Delores Schock was born December 15, 1928 to Theodore and Emily (Burkhardt) Schock in Miller. She grew up in the Ree Heights area, graduating from Ree Heights High School in 1947. She attended the South Dakota Beauty Academy, graduating in 1948.
She worked for Ida Weideman at Ida's Beauty Salon until her marriage to Bruce Hammill on July 23, 1950. She moved to Lampasass, Texas, where her husband was stationed in the Army. She worked at Ruby Lee's Beauty Salon until 1951. She then stayed home with her children.
In 1953, she and her husband returned to South Dakota. In 1961, she became Deputy Sheriff/Jailer while her husband was Hand County Sheriff until 1971. She then went to work at The Miller Press, where she worked until her retirement on December 31, 1993.
She became a resident of Prairie Good Samaritan Center in August 2000.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Miller and a former member of the Ree Heights Congregational Church. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Miller Fire Department Auxiliary and she was a Girl Scout leader.
Survivors include four daughters, Delores (Rex) Hines of Sturgis, Betty Hammill of Redfield, Sandra Hammill of Redfield, Terri (James) Henson of Ree Heights; three sons, Ron Hammill of St. Lawrence, Mike (Jeanine) Hammill of Miller, Tim Hammill of Miller; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Tami and Randy Gross, Kayla, Keven, Tyler and Kelsey of Sturgis, Brandon and Michael Hammill of Miller, Joni Hammill of St. Lawrence and Curtis Henson of Ree Heights; two sisters, Alice (Norbert) Obermueller of San Jose, Calif., Arlene (Verlin) Tollefson of Hitchcock; two brothers, Verlin (Irene)
Schock of Evergreen, Colo., Jerry (Marlene) Schock of Ree Heights; one brother-in-law, Kent (Marge) Hammill of Rapid City; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband on October 18, 1984; her parents; grandparents; one sister, Betty Schwartz on October 13, 1995; one infant brother; one grandson, Joby Hammill on September 5, 1979; and one sister-in-law, Lois Hammill.
