Jack Gortmaker, 61, of Miller, S.D., died Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Avera McKennan
Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at Reck Funeral Home in Miller
with Rev. Beth Kelsey officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Miller.
Casketbearers were Don Kaiser, Nick Gortmaker, Jon Gortmaker, David Ruml, Justin
Sell and Jerry Steptoe. Reck Funeral Home, Miller, was in charge of arrangements.
Jack Gortmaker was born January 3, 1943 to John and Hazel (Gussler) Gortmaker in
Miller. He attended grade school in St. Lawrence.He worked for several farmers and ranchers in Hand County.
He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He especially loved taking Trent and Kristi fishing in the summer months. He also enjoyed watching the PBR and PRCA.
Survivors include a daughter, Michele (Charles) Steptoe of Miller; a son, Bill Gortmaker
of Miller; four grandchildren; two brothers, Louis (Mardella) Gortmaker of Miller and
Harland (Jean) Gortmaker of Miller; seven sisters, Violet (Dick) Deuter of Rapid City,
LuLu (Jack) Shuler of Cody, Wyo., Pearl (Paul) Schlechter of Polo, Karen (Larry) Ruml of
Letcher, Shirley (Ed) Sell of Miller, Anita (John) Beaner of Miller and Rosemary (Lyle)
Goodall of St. Lawrence; a sister-in-law, Betty Gortmaker of Rapid City; an uncle,
Clarence Gussler of Rapid City; an aunt, Arie Bockoff of Sioux Falls; several nieces,
nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jerry and Ben; an infant sister;
five nephews and a niece.
The family prefers memorials.
