Hazel Pearl Gortmaker, 93, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004 at her home.
Services were held Friday, Feb. 20 at First United Methodist Church in Rapid City with
the Rev. Doug Diehl officiating. A second service was held at the First United Methodist
Church in Miller on Saturday, Feb. 21 with the Rev. David Andrews and the Rev. Beth
Kelsey-Engelmann officiating. Interment was at the G.A.R. Cemetery in Miller.
Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City and Reck Funeral Home of Miller were in charge of the
Hazel Pearl Gussler was born May 9, 1910 to George Jefferson and Rosey Belle
(Roberts) Gussler on a farm in Aurora County near Plankinton. S.D. She married John
Gortmaker October 22, 1925, in Minnesota. To this union 13 children were born. They
lived on a farm all of their married life.
After John's death July 31, 1965, she worked at Hand County Memorial Hospital until
1968, when she moved to Rapid City. She worked in a cafe for two years and then
worked at Clarkson Memorial Home until her retirement. She then spent several winters
in Maricopa, Ariz. with her cousin.
She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, writing letters and spending time with her family. She enjoyed all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by three sons, Louis (Mardella) Gortmaker, Harlan (Jean) Gortmaker and Jack Gortmaker, all of Miller; seven daughters, Violet (Dick) Deuter of Rapid City, Lulu
Belle (Jack) Shuler of Cody, Wyo., Pearl (Paul) Schlechter of Polo, Karen (Larry) Ruml of
Letcher, Shirley (Ed) Sell of Miller, Anita (John) Beaner of Miller and Rosemary (Lyle)
Goodall of St. Lawrence; one daughter-in-law, Betty Gortmaker of Rapid City; 44
grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; one
brother, Clarence (Ardith) Gussler of Rapid City; one sister-in-law, Arie Boekhoff of
Sioux Falls; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two sons, Jerry Gortmaker and Ben
Gortmaker; one infant daughter; one son-in-law, Don Adkins; three grandsons, two
great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Churches of Rapid City
and Miller and to Hospice of the Hills.
