Wilfred H. Bartel, age 78, of Huron, died Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.
His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 5 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Huron, with Rev. Dale Sattgast officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Wolsey.
Wilfred Herman Bartel was born January 19, 1926 in Wolsey, to John and Anna (Kahre) Bartel. Wilfred was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey, in the last confirmation class to be confirmed in German. He grew up at Wolsey, and graduated from Wolsey High School. In 1945, he enlisted in the US Navy. Wilfred was discharged in 1946 and returned to Wolsey where he farmed until 1960.
In August 1949, he married Yvonne Jungemann in Wolsey. She died in December 1959.
He married Norelle Christiansen October 7, 1960 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey.
In 1960, he went to work for the South Dakota State Highway Department as a welder, and worked there until his retirement. In retirement he enjoyed woodworking and his gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Norelle, of Huron; eight children, Roger (Linda) Bartel of Cambridge, Kan., Cynthia (Douglas) Sinclair of Sandy, Utah, Theodore (Donna) Bartel of Huron, Melvin Bartel of Durango, Colo., Dale (Koreen) Bartel, of Burden, Kan., Nita Cronin of Auburn, Wash., Toby (Jaci) Bartel of Yale, Wendi (Kirk) Ford of Huron; 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; his brother Elmer (Joy) Bartel of Wolsey; his sister Elena Neeman of Huron; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Yvonne; his son, Pat Dean; his grandson, Branden; three brothers, Alfred, Martin and John, and one sister, Laura.
