Leonard Hemming Nelson of Miller died at his winter home in Mesa, Arizona, on Saturday, March 14, 1998.
Born February 7, 1913 on his family's homestead south of St. Lawrence to David and Ethel (Weeks) Nelson, he was one of five sons and two daughters.He attended country school and St. Lawrence High School.
In 1936, he joined his brother, Lloyd, in Corvallis, Oregon, where he worked in a variety of jobs, including logging. In 1939 he returned to Miller, and went to work for the Halbower Motor Company. In 1941, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked forDouglas Aircraft.
In 1942,in a ceremony in Los Angeles, he was married to Kathleen Corcoran, a native of Miller. They returned to Miller the following year.
During World War II, he entered the Army, serving first in the Cavalry, then in the Signal Corps, stationed in Warrenton, Virginia.
Following his service, he again returned to Miller where, over the years, he owned a gas station, a trucking compnay, served as a bookkeeper at Miller Motor, (Chrysler dealership), as office manager for the State Democratic Central Committee, and then as the city's postmaster, retiring in 1976.
He was active in the community, serving as a city councilman, Commander of the American Legion, and as a member of the Lion's Club. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, and he was a long-time member of the Miller Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Kay; his uncle, Howard Weeks, of Los Angeles; his brother, Keith Nelson of Westport Island, Maine; five children, Gary Nelson of Duluth, Georgia, Robert Nelson of Phoenix, Arizona, Thomas Nelson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Suzanne Klinkel of Boulder, Colorado and Dianne Streifer of Cornonado, California; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dayton, Lloyd and Kenneth, and sisters Carrie and Edna.
A memorial service was held at the Mesa Heritage Mortuary on March 17. Among those attending were Leonard's nephews and their wives from iller, Rich and Becky Nelson and David and Kim Nelson, along with many South Dakota friends wintering in Arizona.
A burial service will be held in Miller at a later date.
