Huh, why stop here? After all, I haven't discussed my own line of descent, the Patersons in Australia. I haven't discussed the other Paterson descendants in Australia, the Handasyde, Adamson and Hayes families.
Pat Wyatt in "Don't write a book about mother" has already written a great deal about the Handasydes in Australia, and I've heard that two other authors have written about specific Handasyde matters.
Perhaps the story of the modern Patersons will never be told because, although there are some 300 descendants of George Paterson (inc. spouses) in Appendix 2, only 4 male descendants in my generation carry the Paterson name and all those from earlier generations are dead.
The only remaining matter that I have an urge to write about would be entitled "Unsolved Problems". Much of this would be of the "Whatever happened to ..." category. Whatever happened to: Dorothy Harrison, the descendants of Christian Boom Jr, the Mallard descendants, George Macfadyen Paterson etc.? Or of the type "Is there a link between ...". Is there a link between Allegonda Jonas and Allegonda Edwards etc.? Another type of unknown would involve places mentioned in Jessie Astwood's letters: Culloden, Auchindr??, Kellinswode, the Battle of Bunker Hill. And where were all the Jamaican properties? Then there are the big questions: What was life really like in Jamaica from 1750 to 1850? Where is John Herman Hall's original of the Family Register?
From the first to second editions of this book, one of those puzzles has been answered. The place Auchindr?? is Auchenbreck in Scotland, according to Robert Louis Stevenson. See Chapter 07. I’ve got closer to a link between Allegonda Jonas and Allegonda Edwards in that I’ve found a Jonas – Edwards marriage of the right vintage. See Chapter 02.
And on that note I bid you goodbye. Just remember: "A man with one watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure". That's how I feel.
