Just when I thought that I had all the gaps filled and this book was as good as it could be, given limited amounts of time, enthusiasm and intelligence, along comes more information and blows it all wide open again.
I didn't start off to write a book. I began writing this shortly after I started looking through the Parish Registers so that I wouldn't forget what I'd learned. I saw a copy of the Family Register for the first time about five years ago, and found Jeremy White on the web about a year ago. I date the start of this genealogy research from my first contact with Jeremy. He's been an invaluable help to me, and thinking back, I wouldn't have been wrong to have put his name as second author. Anyway, shortly after finding Jeremy, I began reading the Parish Registers and shortly after that I began writing this book.
I kept adding to
the book, with chapters such as "Marriages and Social Standing"
following on naturally after reading certain parts of the Parish Registers. As
I wrote more, I could see the book coming to a close. The end happened
suddenly, with all the parts falling into place and gaps filling up. One of the
last gaps to close was my own first marriage date (I unearthed it just three
days ago). All that was missing was a CD-ROM posted from
The CD-ROM not
arriving, after being sent air parcel post more than 2 months ago, Donald
kindly emailed me an extract in Word format giving the descendants of John
Hall. Boy was I in for a shock. I expected it to contain detailed information
on the descendants of Jane Lilias Charliana McPhail and husband Dugald Campbell, and it does. I expected some discrepancies among
the other McPhail descendants. There are less than
there could have been. I expected more information about some other family
lines, possibly the Silburns or some godparents. The Colthirst family is there
(I’ve included that info in the earlier chapter ‘Godparents’) and the Arbouin
family. (The CD_ROM arrived in
Here is the first installment of what he sent me, I've highlighted conflicting information in bold:

Nearly all of the above information on the 7th and 8th generations above is new.
The first thing I noticed was that Donald correctly has Mary Hall as the daughter of John Hall by an earlier marriage. That was a minor shock; I thought that was new information, Jeremy White suggested the possibility (I hadn't thought of it) and I checked and found that it was true. Then I noticed that Donald has two Horsfall children. I had gone looking for them and failed to find them. Later, I noticed that Donald has far more information on the family of Francis Robert Paterson Hall and wife Mary Jane Cocking. Further, and he has more information on the Astwood descendants leading to Rosemary Dodd.
Donald's sources are often remarkably accurate. For instance, where I had "C F Marriott" he has "Charles Felix Marriott". His information allowed me to quickly find six mistakes and one omission in what I'd typed (I'm far too vain to tell you what they were).
However, given the accuracy of Donald's sources, the real shock is the number of direct disagreements in the main body of the family tree; they've left me scrambling for my sources. Most of the conflicts are very minor, a matter of spelling or a slight difference in a date. I'll list some below, but the most severe is as follows.
Jane Edgill Hall
married her first cousin Digby MacKenzie McPhail and was born in 1859. Donald
and I agree on that. However, I have her as the child of Francis Patterson Hall
whereas he has her as the child of John Herman Hall. But Donald's parentage
would make her the aunt of Digby rather than first cousin, so Donald is wrong
and I am right. BUT Donald has her full birth date of
I passed Donald's information, together with some comments, to Wendy Ann Lee, and this is a condensed version of part of her reply:
David, here are some notes regarding your specific questions, some corrections/additions to Lindo’s information, and some comments regarding your list of concerns.
33. Mary Lilias GALBRAITH b. 16 MAY 1915, m. (1) 8 JUN 1937, Denis Malcolm GICK, b. 16 AUG 1904, Cheshire, ENGLAND, occupation Photographer, d. 17 MAY 1962, m. (2) 28 NOV 1943, Ronald Edward Charles PHYSICK, b. 15 DEC 1919, d. ___ 1943.
This is indeed incorrect! Uncle Ron is alive and well in
Edgill is the correct spelling, as far as I know, e.g. my grandmother –
Marjorie Edgill [
22. Jane
Lilias Charliana McPHAIL b.
… was my great
grandmother, and I have her bible with her name written as “Lilly” – so the
correct spelling was more likely Lillias.
ii Lillias
Jane McKenzie CAMPBELL b.
… was my grand aunt. My Dad’s tree has ‘Lilias’, so I don’t know which is correct.
33. Mary Lilias GALBRAITH b. 16 MAY 1915
… was my aunt. Lilias is correct.
Knoles, Bog Walk. The current spelling of this place name is Knollis. If you really want accuracy, my Dad (JWL) could probably look at his collection of antique maps and tell you when and how the name has changed over the years!
JWL has Jane Edgill Hall listed as the
child of Francis Robert Patterson Hall.
Digby Mackenzie MacPhail is listed as the son of Ella McFadyen Hall (Francis R. P.’s sister) and John MacPhail. So it appears that Jane and Digby were indeed
cousins. (Note the spelling of
MacPhail).
38. Dilys Mary PHYSICK b. 13 FEB 1946, m. (1) ___ 1966, Gordon Arthur STANBRIDGE, b. 24 JUN 1942, m. (2) 4 APR 1992, Gregory John GOSSNER.
This is a mistake in interpreting my Dad’s tree. It was Dilys’s daughter, Leah Stanbridge, who married Gregory (and divorced him as soon as possible thereafter). Dilys has never re-married.
42. Wendy Ann LEE b. 6 SEP 1959, m. 23 DEC 1989, Raymond Van BARNEVELD, b. 1 MAY 1958.
The correct year is 1957. That was my Dad’s mistake.
Some more discrepancies, how about Ella MacFadyan Hall? Donald has her born 28 Mar 1836 at Bybrook Estates, Bog Walk, St Catherine and dying at 91 Hanover St Kingston. I have her born 29 May 1836 at Belmont, St Andrew and dying at Bybrook. In this case I'm sure of my source for her birthdate and place, it's in the Family Register and on Bill McPhail's web site. For the place of death, my only source is Bill McPhail's web site, Donald is probably correct.
The discrepancies go right back to the children of John Hall. Here at least I can be sure of my sources because the Family Register and Parish Registers agree on birth dates to within two days. Donald has 5 different birth dates and one different death date. Four of those birth dates are out by 10 days or less (on the fifth, Mary Hall, Donald has inadvertently used the death date as a birth date). This REALLY begs the question, 'Where did this information come from?', it's only slightly less accurate than my sources. My best guess is that James Lee (JWL) was copying from a hard-to-read source.
Here are some that needed more investigation.
1. Donald has Sarah Bryan Hall b. 6 Apr 1800. This is from JLW's tree; I have Sarah Hall b. 4 Apr 1800. Has the Family Register missed the middle name or has Donald's source inadvertently combined Sarah with the first name Bryan of the next youngest sibling? (JWL has Sarah Bryan). I'm still undecided.
2. Donald has Edghill where I have Edgill (one Parish Register entry has Edgehill). I'm sure of the Edgill for Jane Edgill Hughes and William James Edgill Hall (in the Family Register). Bill McPhail has Edgill. Jessie Astwood has Jane Edgill Hall. Wright has Jane Edgill. JWL has Marjorie Edgill Campbell. I think that settles it.
3. Dorothy Gray Jackson. Was she born 21 Jan (JWL) or 22 Jan (Family Register) or 15 Jan (Kingston Parish Register)?
4. William Bryan Hall. Born 4 Dec (Family Register) or 6 Dec (JWL)?
5. Jane Edgill Hughes. Born 1 Feb (both my sources and JWL), Donald is wrong with 6 Feb.
6. Jessie Briscoe Patterson and Duncan Colthirst Patterson. Donald is definitely wrong with Broscoe and Calthirst.
7. Lorenzo Richard Gower Gordon. Donald has Lorenya & Gomer; and Burghase instead of Burghese. Burghese is definitely correct (Family Register and JWL)
8. Edward Hughes Kinkead. His birthdate is 20 Jun 1860 (not 1840) and place Mannings Pen. Wright's "Monumental Inscriptions" agrees with JWL here.
9. Irma Louise Hall not Lorna Louise Hall (Jessie Astwood and JWL).
10. Boyon or Bonyun, Pausacker or Pensicker? Let's keep Pausacker (Pat Wyatt).
11. Knollis not Knoles estate in Bog Walk (Family Register and Wendy Lee).
12. The McPhail who married Olive Lee Powell is John Herman not John Henry (Bill McPhail and JWL).
13. Dugald Henry McPhail was born in 1879 (or 1874) not 1897, and his daughter Euphemia was not born C 1885.
14. Donald Neville Turner. Born Bog
Walk or
Is that all? Far from it, but that's most of the serious ones. I'd better add that the family property of Mt Pleasant in definitely in the Parish of St Andrew, not St Ann. It was one of the three properties named Mt Pleasant that existed in St Andrew in 1840.
Donald Lindo
also has more information on the Kinkead family. Apparently Edward Daniel
Kinkead married again to Ursulena Clarke with whom he had child Rupert Henry
Kinkead, occupation Drug Merchant, b. 15 May 1886 in Kingston. Rupert m.
The info from Donald Lindo also goes part way towards answering a question I had. Jessie Astwood said that Dugald Campbell was related further back. I though that meant that he was related to Susan Campbell (wife of Robert Jackson). I was wrong. Dugald Campbell's mother was a Margaret McPhail from Argyll, Scotland. His wife's father John McPhail was also from Argyll, Scotland. So, although I don't know the exact link, the connection now seems clearer.
