The McPhails

 

I'd better not leave the McPhails off this story. The McPhails make it into the 1925 addition to the Family Register.

Bill McPhail (William Eugene McPhail) is descended from Dugald McPhail, the bother of John McPhail who married into the Hall family. Bill McPhail has kindly put up on the web most of the McPhails. What follows is an excerpt that includes only John McPhail's parents, siblings and descendants. Sally McPhail is the second last person on the following list.

He married Lillias Mackenzie in Kilmartin, Arl., Sct., April 9, 1792. Lillias was born in Scotland ABT. 1770. Lillias was the daughter of Donald Mckenzie and Margaret Mcintyre. Lillias died December 1817 in Kilmartin, Arl., Sct..

5. John Mcphail (Archibald “Maclachlin”) was born in Kilmartin, Arl., Sct. March 13, 1813. John died January 7, 1887 in Kingston, Jamaica, at 73 years of age.

He married Ella Mcfadyen Hall in Parish Ch, St Thomas In Vale, Jamaica, May 17, 1853. Ella was born in Belmont, Saint Andrew, Jamaica May 29, 1836. Ella was the daughter of John Herman Hall and Jane Edgill Hughes. Ella died February 9, 1889 in Bybrook, St Thomas In The Vale, Jamaica, at 52 years of age. She was baptized in Kingston, Jamaica, December 30, 1838.

John Mcphail and Ella Mcfadyen Hall had the following children:

18 i. Jane Lilias Charliana3 Mcphail was born in Knolles, St Thomas In The Vale, Jamaica March 29, 1854. Jane died July 3, 1945 in Jamaica, at 91 years of age. She married Dugald Campbell 1876. Dugald was born October 3, 1844. Dugald died July 3, 1945 at 100 years of age.

20 iii. Archibald Edgill Mcphail was born December 27, 1860. Archibald died September 5, 1918 in Ww1, at 57 years of age. His body was interred aft September 7, 1918 in Linstead, St Thomas In The Vale, Jamaica.

21 iv. Ella Jane Mcphail was born in Jamaica August 24, 1861. Ella died in Usa. She married George Alex DeBoyle Massy. George was born in Fermoy, Cork, Ireland. George died in USA.

23 vi. Isobel Mary Macfayden Mcphail was born in Tulloch Farm, Jamaica October 18, 1866. Isobel died February 11, 1960 at 93 years of age. Her body was interred aft February 12, 1960 in Linstead, St Thomas In The Vale, Jamaica.

24 vii. Margaret Christina Hall Mcphail was born 1869.

25 viii. Mary Christina Hall Mcphail was born in Tulloch Farm, Jamaica November 1877. Mary died May 24, 1878 at less than one year of age.

26 ix. Dugald Henry Mcphail was born in Tulloch Farm, Jamaica 1879. Dugald died 1953 at 74 years of age.

 

19. John Herman Mcphail (John, Archibald “Maclachlin”) was born in Knoles, Bogwalk, Jamaica October 6, 1858. John died July 18, 1937 in Tulloch Farm, Jamaica, at 78 years of age. His body was interred aft July 20, 1937 in Linstead, St Thomas In The Vale, Jamaica.

He married Olive Lee Powell April 11, 1888. Olive was born in Mandeville, Jamaica August 8, 1868. Olive died July 23, 1924 in Paris, France, at 55 years of age.

He married Mary Sullivan Mcphail January 7, 1914. Mary was born in Tulloch Farm, Bog Walk, Jamaica November 17, 1891. Mary was the daughter of John Herman Mcphail and Olive Lee Powell. Mary died November 27, 1965 in Tulloch Farm, Bog Walk, Jamaica, at 74 years of age.

George Neville Turner and Mary Sullivan Mcphail had the following children:

He married Dulcie Sophia Flower November 12, 1925. Dulcie was born in Jamaica January 10, 1894.

He married Jane Edgill Hall BEF. 1888. Jane was born 1859. Jane was the daughter of Francis Robert Paterson Hall and Mary Jane Cocking.

Digby Mackenzie Mcphail and Jane Edgill Hall had the following children:

49 ii. Francis Digby MacKenzie Mcphail was born in Jamaica March 15, 1891. Francis died March 01, 1963 at 71 years of age. He married Hope Wortley June 01, 1940. Hope was born June 10, 1906.

He married Margaret Evanson Boyon in Jamaica, July 12, 1927. Margaret was born in Barbados, West Indies February 13, 1905.

John Henry MacKenzie Macphail and Margaret Evanson Boyon had the following children:

65 i. Deeta Margaret MacKenzie5 Macphail was born in Jamaica November 13, 1926. She married Claude James Stewart. Claude was born September 29, 1916.

He married Janet Ure Hacker in Vancouver, Canada, April 11, 1959. Janet was born in Brisbane, Australia January 10, 1935.

Jeremy White has kindly sent me some family tree charts that Don Turner (Donald Neville Turner) (dec.) sent to Angèle Vidal-Hall. Don Turner was a descendant of John Herman Hall and Jane Edgill Hughes / Hall through the McPhail connection. For a full reconstruction please see APPENDIX 2. The following (from the first edition of this book) contains many serious errors in the Massy branch.

The charts that I've been reading this off are at times very unclear and contradictory. The above is a best reconstruction. I won't give alternatives except to note that "Massy" may be "Massey".

 

Tulloch Estate was purchased from the Davidsons of Tulloch, Inverness on 20 Jul 1864 by John McPhail. I'm in touch with Bill McPhail, a descendant of John McPhail's elder brother Dugald. John McPhail went to Jamaica in 1840.

 

There's a branch of the McPhails not listed here, it's the branch that leads to Wendy Lee. I've put all the details in a later chapter titled "Info from Lindo" (but see the birthday book below).

Five of the daughters of Francis & Mary were still single (and alive) in 1924.

 

Now is probably my last chance to mention the links that cross from one family line to another. I've mentioned two, the first cousin marriages of William Bryan Hall to Dorothy Rawleigh Hall and of Jane Edgill Hall to Digby MacKenzie McPhail. There are two others that I'll call the Powell and Masters connections. Thomas Pearson Powell, who married a great aunt of Wendy Lee had a sister Olive Lee Powell who married John Herman McPhail. More surprising is the Masters connection; Edith Emily Masters, who married Charles Herman Vidal Hall, was the aunt of Ann Sutherland Masters who married Donald Neville Turner.
