Gordons and Geggs

Mary Ann Hall, eighth child of Richard Hall and Margaret Mallard / Hall married Dr William Gordon. The Gordon surname was a very common name on Jamaica, and there were many William Gordons born there, but this William Gordon was born in Edinburgh.

They lived at first at Villa de Medici in St Andrew and later at Belcour Lodge, Bassford Hill, and Ropley, all in St Andrew. Of these four, only Belcour Lodge appears in the 1840 Jamaica Almanac. Together they had a string of children who were christened with absurdly long names.

Mary Ann Hall b. 12 May 1806 bap. 23 Jul 1806

m. 10 Aug 1827 Dr William Gordon b. 12 Nov 1797 d. 25 Sep 1836

    Lorenzo Richard Gower Gordon b. 14 Jun 1828 d. 6 Oct 1841

    Julian William Burghese Gordon b. 14 Dec 1829 d. 18 Sep 1832

    Anna Maria Louisa Levison Doria Gordon b. 22 Apr 1831 d. 13 Jan 1848

Frances Jane Adelaide Elizabeth Colonna Gordon b. 30 Jun 1833

    Jemima Charlotte Florentia Antoinette Lamballe Gordon b. 17 Nov 1834 d. 1871

    Mary Ann Isabella Gordon b. 28 Dec 1836 d. 1858

The last was a posthumous child of Dr William Gordon, which accounts for the shorter name.

A few variant spellings of these names exist. The St Andrew baptism index has Jemima F A D Gordon. The St Andrew marriage index has Anna M L S Gordon (although the S could be a T or I). The St Andrew burial index has Borghese instead of Burghese.

According to Pat Wyatt, Frances m. 1859 C.F. Marriott; and Jemima m. G.H. Littlejohn.

Anna Maria (etc.) Gordon married the Reverend Joseph Gegg 7 Jan 1847 and they had child Mary Alice Gegg b. 10 Jan 1848 at Belize, Honduras. Unfortunately, Anna Maria died in the same place just three days later.
