PLEASE NOTE:

Unless noted otherwise, most of these listings are quoted from postings to Rootsweb’s Missouri Ghost Town discussion forum (THE LIST). Some minor editing for editorial consistency and spelling WAS made, as well as spelling out of directions (N, SE, NNW, etc), and numbers less than ten.
Unless noted otherwise, indicated population figures are from the 1990 census. (In the next year these should be updated to the 2000 census.) If the population is listed as 0*, the asterisk indicates “assumed”, based on other facts.
Many of these listed locations may be just rural post offices, country churches schools, forts, stage stations, crossroads stores, mills or river fords, rather than what we normally consider towns. The reason for that is that many of these types of locations had small communities grow up around the main business.
When a current town that is not listed in this work went by a different name, or a name markedly different than its present name, it is indicated by the DEAD NAME entry. These are noted due to the fact that these names MAY be discovered in research, and by listing them here, it makes it easier for the researcher to discover the current name.
In all the listings below, personal comments will be noted with either names or initials, like (MF) {Mike Flannigan}, or (GBS) {Me}. In some cases, I didn’t write down the name, but only an e-mail address, so I left them in. If you know of any Missouri ghost town location not listed on these pages, please contact THE LIST if you are a member, or me if not. I will pass on the information to THE LIST.

Locations with part of the name HIGHLIGHTED are linked to a page listing “all” locations of the same type such as those listed below. Many times these type of locations acted as a magnet for a small community that later faded away. Some of these locations included: Ferries, Mills (These include flouring, grist and logging mills.), Mines (and the associated mining camps), Rural Post Offices (These were usually small “post offices” located in a farmer’s home or out building. They served folks in outlying farming areas, and often acted as a community center or gathering place to catch up on the latest gossip or commodity prices.), Way Stations (These include railroad & stage stations, rural stores, taverns, or other stopping points along transportation routes.).

GALLAGHER MINE Franklin Co.

GALLAHERS MILLS Franklin Co.

Located in northwestern Central Township. Built in 1835.

I think this was a happening place at one time, but I can't locate it. It's probably southwest of Union.

GALLIGHER FURNACE Franklin Co.

Located in Central Township.

Probably just another name for Gallahers Mills. (Mike Flannigan)

GALLUPS MILL Boone Co.

This was a gristmill operated by Thomas J Gallup.

GAMMON FORD Lincoln Co.

Gammon Ford was a crossing on the West Fork Cuivre River in northwestern Hawk Point Township and southeastern Nineveh Township.

GARDENIA PLACE St. Louis Co.

Located in Central Township south of St Vincent Station.

This is probably very close to Pagedale. (Mike Flannigan)

GARRETTS MILL Benton Co.

Garretts Mill was a sawing, planing, hub and spoke mill on Grand River, 3.5 miles northeast of Warsaw. It operated in 1874, and was named for the owner.

GASCOZARK Francis Co.

GATH POST OFFICE Johnson Co.

No information could be found about this vanished point. (Mike Flannigan)

GEBLER Gasconade Co.

There was a post office and store in this location. It was named for W. S. Gebler, a pioneer who established the store.

GEIGERS MILL Lincoln Co.

GEORGETOWN St. Louis Co.

Located in south St Louis County. Named for George Aff. (GNIS)

GERARD POST OFFICE Cass Co.

Gerard Post Office was located near Barton. It was named for Gerard Barker who owned the land where the post office was located. (Mike Flannigan, Jan 02, 2001)

GERDEMANNS STORE Warren Co.

Located in Elkhorn Township near Pendleton. Established between 1850 and 1853 by H. H. Gerdemann, and was still operating in 1943.

GIBBS Adair Co. 89

Lat 40° 05' 52" N, Long 092° 25' 00" W

GIBSON Benton Co.

Gibson was a rural post office in 1889 and 1891. It was named for the first owner of the store here.

GIBSON'S MILL Greene Co.

The reconstructed Gibson's Mill is on the east side of Wilson's Creek, within Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. Its dates of operation are not known, but it was active in the 1860s.

GIBSONS MILLS Stone Co.

Was named for the owner.

GILES MINE Franklin Co. 0

This lead mine was located in Secs 32 & 33, T41N, R1E, Prairie Township. In 1888 it had reached a depth of 40’. Exact location not determined. (GBS)

GILLESPIE MILL Dade Co.

The Gillespie Mill was built about 1840 by J. H. Gillispie on the Turnback River, just below the St Louis-San Francisco Railroad.

Anybody know if the name Hoyle is associated with this? (Mike Flannigan)

GILL Atchison Co.

Location not determined.

GIVENTON Monroe Co.

This place was in Union Township, and was a town platted on May 31, 1888 by Adam Given, owner of the site, and it was named for him. The town did not materialize.

GLAIZE AU BICHE St. Louis Co.

GLAIZEAUBICHE St. Louis Co.

AKA – Glaize au Biche

A settlement in St. Ferdinand Township in 1860.

It sure surprises me that we've lost this one. Anybody know where it was? (Mike Flannigan)

GLENCOE Franklin Co. 0

An early milling center in western Central Township on Hamilton Creek. (GNIS)

It is mentioned briefly in the 1888 Goodspeed’s History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford & Gasconade Counties, Missouri. T42N, R1E, Central Township. (GBS)

GLENROCK Henry Co.

Glenrock was a trading point in southeastern Leesville Township. It was established in 1880. It was named for the man who had the first store there. It was abandoned before 1933.

I think this is present day Tightwad. (Mike Flannigan)

GLENWOOD Jefferson Co.

Located just south of Glen Park on the Missouri-Pacific Railroad.

Anybody think this is Bushburg? (Mike Flannigan)

GLOBE Johnson Co.

Globe was a rural post office, six miles east of Holden.

This town may be associated with the name Elliot. (Mike Flannigan)

GOAT RANCH Warren Co.

A goat farm in Lepp Hollow in Bridgeport Township.

GODDARDS MILL Bates Co.

Goddards Mill was located in Charlotte Township on the Goddard Branch. It was named for Dr. Goddard.

GOFFS POST OFFICE Henry Co.

Goffs Post Office was the first post office in the county. It was established in 1835 in Deer Creek Township, and named for William Goff, the first postmaster.

GOLCONDA MINE Franklin Co. 0

This lead mine was located in the northwestern part of Union Township, T43N, R1E and in 1888 had reached a depth of 150’. However it was not operating at that time. A second Golconda Mine was listed in the county by GNIS in Boles Township. (GBS)

GOLDEN FORD Barry Co.

Location not determined.

GOODE(S) MILL Franklin Co.

A flour mill in Union Township, on the Bourbeuse River.

This was probably southwest or south of Union. (Mike Flannigan)

GOODNIGHT MILL Greene Co.

Located about 25 miles northeast of Springfield near the Greene-Polk County line. There was also a small town located here. The first mill was burned during the Civil War and the second one was washed away. In 1914 a third mill was built, and operated until 1942.

GOPHER MINE Franklin Co.

GORE Warren Co.

Shown on the 1938 map southeast of Case, at or near the junction of SH 94/CR B, five miles east of McKittrick (Montgomery Co.) (GBS)

GOSS & VANDEVENTERS MILL Monroe Co.

This mill was in Jefferson Township, south of Florida. It was owned by John Goss and John Vandeventer, and was one of the first in the county and made flour on a big scale.

GRAFTON LANDING St. Charles Co.

Located across from Grafton, IL.

GRAHAM St. Louis Co.

AKA – Grahams

Located in southern St Ferdinand Township on the Wabash Railroad.

GRAHAMS St. Louis Co.

GRANGE HALL Benton Co.

Grange Hall was located at Palo Pinto, during its days as a trading post. It was an assembly hall named for the secret associations known as Grangers.

GRANGE STORE Osage Co.

GRANT Cass Co.

Grant was a town in Index Township, and was laid out in 1867 on land granted by Henry V. Stall. It was named for Gen. U. S. Grant. The town was deserted when the railroad missed it. It is now a cornfield and a cemetery. This is north of Creighton along Grant road. (Mike Flannigan, Jan 02, 2001)

GRANTS FORD Lincoln Co.

Grants Ford was a ford on the Cuivre River between southwestern Monroe Township and southeastern Clark Township.

GRAY GAP Franklin Co.

DEAD NAME – Early name for Gray Summit. (GBS)

GRAY RIDGE — -

GREEN GROVE Adair Co. Rural

Lat 40° 18' 50" N, Long 092° 43' 13" W

GREGG St. Louis Co.

Located in Central Township.

GRIFFETHS FLOURING MILL St. Charles Co.

Oldest flour mill in St. Charles Co. Built in 1838 by G. Collier.

GRIFFIN MILL Christian Co.

Was a mill near Wilson Creek Battleground, and named for its owner.

I think this is just west of Nelson Mill Bridge. (Mike Flannigan)

GRIMMETTS MILL Lincoln Co.

AKA – Richardsons Mill

Grimmetts Mill was located at the Louisville and Olney Ford over Cuivre River.

GRIMSLEY(S) STATION St. Louis Co.

AKA – Grimsleys

Located in southern Carondelet Township on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. (Mike Flannigan, Dec 30, 2000)

Appears to be near Bella Villa. (Mike Flannigan)

GRISWOLD CITY Franklin Co.

Located in the northern part of Boeuf Township along the Missouri River. The town was platted in 1836 on land owned by F. Griswold, and was an early rival of New Haven.

GROVEDALE Gasconade Co.

Location not determined.

GROVELAND Warren Co.

GRUBE Franklin Co.

AKA – Grubes Store

An early voting place in Lyon Township.

GRUBES STORE Franklin Co.

GUMBO St. Francois Co. 100

Located between Park Hills and Leadwood, my grandparents lived there. The tornado of 1957 also went thru there. (L Patterson, Jan 20, 2004)

Had a 1990 population of 100 (GBS)

GUMBO St. Louis Co.

Was located by Rombach's Pumpkin Patch. (Michelle Robinson)

The Gumbo area is booming. Go down there sometime. Gumbo is alive and well, and is still shown on many maps. It had only about 15 occupied structures in 1982. (Mike Flannigan, Jan 13, 2002)

Gumbo Bottoms (West St. Louis County) is located on the banks of the Missouri River, west of St. Louis, off of Highway 40. This is a large farming community, and Spirit of St. Louis Airport is located there. They have a very large air show there every year, usually around Labor Day. This whole area was greatly affected by the flood of 1993, when the levy broke and the Missouri River completely flooded the area. If there was a Cafe by the name of Wolf, before the flood, they may not have reopened afterwards.

My cousin was born in Gussett in 1919, and I've speculated that Gussett may have been on a railroad or a railroad siding, as it is known that my uncle worked for and retired from a railroad in Kansas City, MO about 1950, but I don't know which railroad. (Iola, Jan 11, 2001)
