When most people think of ghost towns, CANADA is NOT one of the areas that come to mind.  Yet, our northern neighbor has many thousands of ghost towns.

The province of British Columbia has many old gold mining camps as well as former agricultural centers, fishing villages and old forts that all invite a visit. 

British Columbia has a rich historical past, and many ghost towns worth doing the research to try and find.

Listed below are only a few of the hundreds of sites that exist in this province.

FISGARD LIGHTHOUSE

Located at the Fort Rodd Hill historical site west of Victoria, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, this historic old lighthouse was originally built in 1860 and was automated in 1929.  It still operates.  This was our Ghost Town of the Month for August 2009.

FORT RODD HILL

Built by the British in 1878, this coastal defense fort is the best preserved British coastal defense fort in the world.  It is located on the west side of the entrance to Esquimalt Harbor west of Victoria, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island.  It is a living history museum and has had minimal restoration and recreation.  This was our Ghost Town of the Month for August 2009.

Historians estimate that there are many thousands of ghost towns scattered across Canada and over 50,000 across the United States.
