Ghost Town USA Column Index for Canada

When most people think of ghost towns, CANADA is NOT one of the areas that come to mind.  Yet, our northern neighbor has many thousands of ghost towns, some of which were featured in my new book. (SEE note to left.)

The province of British Columbia has many old gold mining camps as well as former agricultural centers, fishing villages and old forts that all invite a visit.

British Columbia has a rich historical past, and many ghost towns worth doing the research to try and find.

Listed below are only a few of the hundreds of sites that exist in this province.

Where photos are indicated thusly (PHOTO!), please use your browser’s “BACK” button to return to this page.  More photos will be added over time.

This is one of the towns featured in my 2010 book, GHOST TOWNS: Yesterday & TodayTM.

Located at the Fort Rodd Hill historical site west of Victoria, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, this historic old lighthouse was originally built in 1860 and was automated in 1929.  It still operates.  This was our Ghost Town of the Month for August 2009.

Built by the British in 1878, this coastal defense fort is the best preserved British coastal defense fort in the world.  It is located on the west side of the entrance to Esquimalt Harbor west of Victoria, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island.  It is a living history museum and has had minimal restoration and recreation.  This was our Ghost Town of the Month for August 2009.

This is one of the towns featured in my newest book, GHOST TOWNS: Yesterday & TodayTM.

Historians estimate that there are many thousands of ghost towns scattered across Canada and over 50,000 across the United States. For the American states, Gary B. Speck Publications is in process of publishing unique state, regional, and county guides called The Ghost Town Guru's Guide to the Ghost Towns of “STATE”

These original guides are designed for anybody interested in ghost towns. Whether you are a casual tourist looking for a new and different place to visit, or a hard-core ghost town researcher, these guides will be just right for you. With over 30 years of research behind them, they will be a welcome addition to any ghost towner's library.

Thank you, and we'll see you out on the Ghost Town Trail!

E-mailers, PLEASE NOTE:

Due to the tremendous amount of viruses, worms and “spam,” out there, I no longer open or respond to e-mails with unsolicited attachments, OR messages on the subject lines with “Hey”, “Hi”, “Need help”, “Help Please”, “???”, or blank subject lines, etc.  If you do send E-mail asking for information, or sharing information, PLEASE indicate the appropriate location AND state name, or other topic on the “subject” line.

These listings and historical vignettes of ghost towns, near-ghost towns and other historical sites in BRITISH COLUMBIA above are for INFORMATIONAL purposes only, and should NOT be construed to grant permission to trespass, metal detect, relic or treasure hunt at any of the listed sites.

If the reader of this guide is a metal detector user and plans to use this guide to locate sites for metal detecting or relic hunting, it is the READER'S responsibility to obtain written permission from the legal property owners. Please be advised, that any provincially or nationally owned sites will probably be off-limits to metal detector use. Also be aware of any federal, provincial or local laws restricting the same.
