I was born in Calcutta India in 1945 just two years before India gained her Independence from the British. Though we lived through those momentous events they had very little immediate effect on my family as we were in the Andaman Islands by 1947. My parents were Anglo-Indian and I suspect may have been involved in the movement among the community who’s ambition was to develop the Islands as a homeland for Anglo-Indians, renaming them Britasia.
The desire failed, officially due to the lack of finance and viable plans but probably also because the indigenous Anglo-Indian, essentially an urban dweller is better at supporting than creating an infrastructure. This view is my opinion and will probably be controversial, if you have an opinion either for or against please feel free to express it in the guest book. My family returned to Calcutta in about 1950 where I grew up.
Following my mother’s death in 1961 father brought his three daughters to England to start a new life, we all married here and long after the death of my father I began to research his history following the birth of my first grandchild. One of my goals was to discover the Indian part of my heritage and the Rootsweb hosted India List has been especially useful in my research.
I hope to publish my work in the near future but am still seeking any information during the period of my life in the Andaman Islands, especially if any knew my parents or are descended from the Commissioner of Forests during the years 1947-50.
