What's in a Name?
The origin of the village's name cannot be determined with
any certainty. Some think it was named after its presumed founder
Adriaan Ouddorp. Others are of the opinion that it owes
its name to the polder Diepenhorst - after the diking in of another
polder, probably "de oude Oostdijk", the polder Diepenhorst
as first and oldest, to distinguish it from the new polder was
named het Oude land (the old land) and its village Ouddorp
(the old village). Compare the village of Stellendam which
was originally named Nieuwedorp (the new village). Ouddorp
would have gained its name when Goedereede was constructed,
likely also refered to as Nieuwedorp in the beginning. (Van
der Aa, Ds. G. v. d. Zee)
