The author, Justine Davis Randers-Pehrson, is a direct descendant of Captain Anton Joseph Kilp, USA (1819-1877), a Bavarian "Forty-Eighter" who served in the Union Army throughout the Civil War.

Randers-Pehrson received her education at Hood College, Radcliffe College, the Université de Nancy, the Sorbonne, Universität Heidelberg, and Howard University.

Professionally, Randers-Pehrson was successively a cataloguer at the Library of Congress and at the National Library of Medicine, an editor with the US Office of Technical Services, and a translator with the US Patent Office.
