History
& Achievements :
- Private William Blizzard arrived in Australia as
part of the North
Hamptonshire Regiment (48th
- Regiment of Foot) contingent, on board the
ship "Dick" on 3/11/1817 one of three ships. The"
Barque..Matilda
", and HM. ship " Lloyd's
" being the other two . He began his military career
at the in 1793 age of 9. His father was the band master
of the 48th. William became a Drummer Boy under his
fathers command. During his time prior to discharge,
William became a Free Mason and eventually headed the
Masonic Lodge no 218 as Master . It is interesting to
note that at on stage William was recorded as a Corporal
of the band yet he discharged as a Private. The reasons
for the demotion is unknown.
- Following his discharge he became the publican of
the Golden Fleece Inn at Kelso, Bathurst. William
- managed this inn until his early death in 1832.
- For his military service he was
not awarded the General Service Medal . This is because
the Medal was not minted for issue until 1848 . It is
fair to say that he would have most certainly received
the medal had he lived past 1832.
