    History & Achievements :
During the period 1882-85 the then Governor of New Zealand made him Acting Consul to Samoa and he wrote a book about his experiences.
He had a son by a Samoan woman and that son's descendants are now a sizeable clan, mostly in New Zealand, including Joseph Churchward who has acquired an international reputation as a designer of typefaces.

Oral tradition among his descendants is that he came to New Zealand during the Maori Wars (presumably in a unit from 2/14) and later returned and got the Samoan position via contacts he had established then.
