    Sergeant WILLIAM VANEY Reg No 210. 2/14 died while still serving in Auckland. New Zealand. 25th May 1865 leaving his wife Honora nee Holmes whom he married  in Cork. Ireland 20th Sept 1854  with three children. Sarah Ann 1857-1937. Honora 1863- 1925. & Robert Ewen 1865-1941. My Grandfather. She married Cpl KIERAN WHELAN 2/14 born 1833 in Laois or Queens County. Ireland at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church. Auckland 3rd Sept 1866. They had a child John in Auckland in 1867 and went with the regiment to Emerald Hill where Elizabeth was born in 1868 & John died in 1870.  When the regiment returned to England Kieran, Honora & family returned to NEW ZEALAND where they took up a land grant in PATEA. TARANAKI & Kieran became a Sergeant in the Armed Constabulary. A daughter Mary Ellen was born in 1871. Kieran's brother James who had been in the 2/14 lived with them & was also in the Armed Constabulary. He died in Patea in 1874.The family moved to Wanganui in 1882 where Kieran was still in the Armed Constabulary. The family moved to Wellington in 1886 where Kieran was a gardener in the new Botanical Gardens. Honora died 18 Sept 1888 & Kieran on the 27 Nov 1908. Both are buried in the Mount Street Cemetery. Wellington.
