My 3rd great grandfather is said by the family's records
to have served under Wellesley (Duke of Wellington) in
the Peninsula wars and at Waterloo before coming to
Sydney in 1820.
"...a young
lieutenant of the Royal Scarlet infantry Regiment named
William Gordon Ward, who hailed from Waterford, Ireland,
but of whose parents &c no information has been
retained except that they were intimate with the then Sir
Arthur Wellesley afterwards Duke of Wellington, my
grandfather Ward served under the great Duke in all the
Peninsula Wars, and fought at the battle of
Waterloo,
