- Area Settled :
- Perth
- History &
Achievements :
- Family legend says that he was born in Dodford,
Northamptonshire, parents John & Mary but I have seen
no definite evidence of this.
This information from AJCP Reel 3809:
William, aged 32, was part of a convict guard which
sailed from Deptford,Kent on 7 July 1838 on the Portsea.
He was accompanied by his wife, MA Wagstaff (30) and
daughter MA (Mary Ann) Wagstaff (18months.) Another
daughter, Sarah Jane, might also have been on board. (The
Wagstaffs were not recorded on the passenger list for the
Portsea but appear in the Surgeon Superintendent's Log. )
The Portsea reached Hobart in early December 1838 but I
don't know whether the Wagstaffs disembarked there or
continued on to Sydney. However William was part of a
detachment which departed Hobart on 26 April 1840 on the
Bark Runnymede for Swan River. AJCP Reel 3811. The WA
Biographical Dictionary shows that the Runnymede arrived
in Swan River on 25 June 1840 and that William was
stationed at Headquarters Perth. Reel 3811 states that he
was on detachment - Dales. I assumed that this was an
area but I believe that there was an officer Ensign
Dales.
No record of the death of William's first wife has been
found but on 25 March 1851 William married as a Bachelor
to Mary Murphy. This union produced two children, John
1845 and Elizabeth 1853.
According to WADB William was a Tailor at Toodyay in 1869
and a Town Crier in 1875.
William Wagstaff died of Old Age and Debility on 8 August
1880 at Perth - possibly at the Mt Eliza Invalid Depot.
