History
& Achievements :
- My ancestor, Richard Tuckwell, arrived on the
"Pitt" in 1792. Richard was a Quarter-master-sergeant
in
- the Corps under the command of Major Francis
Grose. He was discharged from the Corps on 23
April, 1794 and for was given a grant at Concord and
lease on property at 106 Pitt Street. His
occupations were listed as farmer, butcher; he also
held a liquor licence. Richard died on 21 March,
1820 and was buried in the old Devonshire Street Cemetery.
His grave is now located in the Pioneer Cemetery at
Botany.
- Richard had seven children to Elizabeth Buckner,
who also arrived on the "Pitt". They were
never married
- maybe because Richard was already had a wife and
child whom he had left behind in England. Their
relationship broke up about 1807, when Richard married
Elizabeth Sidebotham and Elizabeth Buckner married
Patrick Kirk. Tuckwell descendants settled in the
Hills district and there is a Tuckwell Road in the area.
