Charles had previously
joined the 65th Regiment of the British Army in 1831. We are uncertain
where he served before he, with a contingent of the 65th, sailed for
Sydney in 1846, as guards to a shipment of convicts. A week after arrival
in Sydney, the soldiers re-embarked on another vessel bound for Wellington
to help subdue the Maori following an escalation of the Land Wars. Soon
after arrival, the troops were involved in battle at Orokiwi (near Porirua
Harbour).
In 1856 Charles took his
discharge in Wellington, being granted land in Kaiwarra, where he lived
until his death in 1887, aged 75.
Charles and Sarah had 4
children in Ireland, all coming to NZ with their parents. 3 more children
were born in Wellington, the youngest being John, born in1856.
