    History & Achievements :

Thomas Edmonds. Thomas enlisted in the 50th Regiment at age 17 in 1820,served for six and a half years in the West Indies, then went to Ireland where he married an Irish woman named Mary and had his first child, Maria my great-great-grandmother. He was posted to Australia I think in 1834 (I need to go to the Mitchell Library to check the dates), but his next three children were all born in NSW between 1835 and 1839. I'm awaiting the baptism certificates to see where he was located. He and his family went back to England circa 1840, so he is not a "Redcoat settler", but his daughter Maria married my great-great-grandfather, John Kohane, at Chatham in 1853. John served with the 95th regiment of Foot in the Crimea, was wounded with a bullet and a fragment of a Russian shell at the Battle of the Alma, and returned to England in 1855. He was discharged as a Chelsea Pensioner, re-enlisted in the 8th regiment of Foot under his mother's maiden name, was discharged as medically unfit in 1861 and his pension was reinstated. My great-grandfather, James Kohaen, was born at Chatham in 1859.The family, consisting of John, Maria, and four children, came to Australia in 1866. Here we have an example of a child of a soldier who served in Australia coming back to settle. Maria was born in 1833, so she would have spent most of her first eight years in Australia
